Her Majesty

Hi buds,

Just a quick note to let you know I'll be attending ROFLcon again this year. If I can arrange it, I hope to give out some swag there, but I'm not promising anything.

That's all.

So you are enough of an attention whore to plaster your attendance on the front page of your website, but too much of a snobby jew to actually reveal your name at the convention, and too much of a coward to join a panel for the purpose of answering questions about your website? Why even bother going max?

Speaking of questions, when are you going to address this site's diversity problem? There are too many niggers and spics on this site. The good users of YTMND have been running some off with awesome Moon man sites, but some unscrupulous users on here actually encourage the minorities to stay. It is an absolute fact that the best users on this site are white and non-jew. You should do more to acquire and keep these whites on the site.

No. YTMND's hosting bills are quite small at this point and we're in the black. The major costs are replacing the old ailing hardware purchased in 2006. With the recent replacement of the master DB server and master content servers, there isn't much that's likely to fail. At this point, YTMND is just stocking up its war chest.

Beginning Of The End For The Demon

Yay! I think this might be the beginning of the end for The Demon in this house.

He is currently, as I am writing, pissing everyone off to the Nth degree. He is now ranting and raving about how spoiled is Blake. While I agree with him, I am not coming to his defense. For one thing, I’ve been down that road and it’s a dead end. Another is because I hate The Demon more than I dislike how Blake has been spoiled rotten. I’m of the opinion when someone has dug themselves a hole and they want to keep digging, there is really nothing you can do for them.

So right now, I am going to sit back and wait to see what happens. There’s nothing I can do.

Well, see ya’ later!

The Unfunny Truth About Unfunny Websites

Whatever first attracts you to a community, be it the freedom to post shock images, grown men skillfully pretending to be teenage girls, or fresh fruit, if you stay there it will be for one of two reasons. Either you've made friends you enjoy interacting with or you dislike the community so much that you just want to troll them.

In this way YTMND should be different. Because it's not a message board. People create images and audio files to make their own YTMNDs. That's what the site is for. If the site worked as intended these YTMNDs would be rated on their content and nothing else. But that's not how YTMND does work. It's not a stretch to suggest that most of us could predict exactly what everyone else is going to vote on any given site without ever seeing the site itself, only who submitted it.

Now whether YTMND ratings worked as intended or not the site would not be as popular as it was in its heyday. Incompatibility with mobile devices and ever changing browsers treating Gifs and Flash animation in ever changing ways make YTMNDs an unfriendly link to share with the WWW. Indeed it seems that whatever is currently the most used browser in the world it's a safe bet it will not play (re: sync) your faggy short films as you intended, despite your files being synced to the 100th of a second when you made them.

However it's still not uncommon to see a YTMND go viral. Yesterday this site [site bartman:profile] got a few thousand hits from offsite. Follow the link back you'll see this comment:

"Sorry, I don't click external links. never heard of that site..."

Which was followed by someone explaining what YTMND was and insisting it was a safe site

I think I shall indulge in a rant -everyone else seems to be.

I hate the voting system on this site.

The first 10 votes have too weighted an impact on where a site ends up. A worthwhile site can conceivably never make the front page because a small group of users decide they don't like the site or the user. A couple of low votes and it's buried.

I used to see this happen all the time. Both for "high-effort" and "low-effort" sites, but I see it way more often with "high-effort" sites. There is an annoying trend among some users to shit on "not-funny" sites and chastise the creators for putting effort into their work. I really hate these fucking debates - guess what kids, your MurdarMachene ripoffs and Moon Man sites are "not funny" to other people too. And not all of us think sites have to be "funny" to have value.

There is no effective way for honest users to counter mass downvoters and trolls. The mods are asleep. Sorry guys, but this place is not well moderated, and this "community" needs moderation. It's too easy for people to create alts and downvote others.

In fact, the effort it takes to make a site is completely out of proportion with the ease which a "new user" can one-star a site. It's easier to be negative than positive here, which is why the helpful, generous, and creative users never last as long as the negative people who only come to mock others, feel-self-important, and seek justification for their nonsense by joining with other negative users.

The truth is that 1-star votes have more power than 5-star votes on a site's fate, and the people that wield this power indiscriminately are ruining the site.
May 5th, 2012
164th
(1)
If YTMND wants to get better, it needs moderation. Full stop. There are a few things that could be tried:

1. Get some fucking moderators. There are some good people that actually waste their free time here and would be fine curators of the site. I know you said not to ask about moderators, max, but you know what? I'm asking. This place needs them. Sorry, but you can't just wish away trolls.

max, you've talked about making this site "self-moderated" but I think it would actually be easier on you to delegate the responsibility to others. If you still have some ambition to implement self-regulating mechanics on this site:

2. Add an algorithm to the voting system so that users who tend to "5" or "1" everything gets their votes "down-weighted" over time. Your 10,000th "1" vote isn't as much of a downvote as the first. It wouldn't just be a simple count of "number of 1-votes"; it would compare number of 1-votes to number of total votes and analyze the user's vote spread to determine if someone is a "downvoter" or "upvoter" or someone that only votes "1" or "5".

3. Restrict the voting privileges of new users. Voting should be more of an earned privilege, and less of a lazy entitlement. If new accounts couldn't vote, it would also remove the incentive to create alt accounts.

4. New users can be "fast-tracked" to voting privileges by contributing to the site. The best way would be to have a new user "vouched" by an older user, but you could also set up something that analyzed a user's sites and comments and measured it against some criterion (maybe something like how Featured Users worked). Moderators could also decide to promote an account.
May 6th, 2012
181st
(2)
1.) What exactly do you think moderation will do? All moderators could do in the past is mark sites NSFW. What exactly is so rampantly ruining the site that requires intervention?

2.) This has been discussed at length both in news posts and on the wiki. I don't want to get into the game of using the behavior of a user, their voting habits, or anything else to change the value of votes. A vote is a vote, and that isn't going to change.

3 + 4) This is something we've discussed in the past as well, but it ultimately punishes new members of the site much more than it would stop alt-voting. Using a time-based gating system would just get people to plan out alts and using an activity-based gating system would end up spamming the site. The easiest way to remove incentive for making alts is by deleting the main accounts of people who make alts to vote, which we've been doing.

5. Make it easier for these new accounts to SHARE YTMNDS WITH THE REST OF THE INTERNET. Post to Twitter, Facebook, reddit, whatever. Create something that monitors the value these users add to your site: how much traffic they're pulling in with their recommendations, how much hustle they put into promoting OTHER PEOPLE'S work. Let that good work be part of the "fast-track" algorithm to voting privileges.

I honestly don't think this can be all self-regulated; I think YTMND needs to get some good moderators. max, you obviously don't have the time to make YTMND your top development priority, so I think the best move here is to set up some new moderators that can be trusted to be fair and impartial.

This is not about narrowing the range of "acceptable sites" or saying that faggy art films are better than no-effort sites. I love all kinds of sites: noise sites, art sites, faggy short films, DEWs, fads, fad comps, classic sites - the style doesn't matter. What matters is intent. It's obvious when someone's intent is just to piss off another user, troll the community, or just generally act like a tit. I humbly submit that it wouldn't be too hard get a few guys to volunteer to delete some accounts for you.

Trolls and thoughtful discussion below, please.

The term troll is subjective. It is not used correctly and is thrown too often. To many, the Moon Crew is a troll group, to many others, it is not. Labeling users "trolls" is just pointless and unfounded.

In regards to the current quality of this site.

1. The site is not that bad in terms of quality. There are still many awesome sites (such as Moon man sites) that are posted daily.

2. The reason average site quality dropped sometime in 2006 is because of your jewy jewishness. When a large amount of minorities entered your website, you did nothing to remove them, as they boosted your site's traffic. It is a scientific fact that niggers ruin everything, so by not deleting them you turned YTMND in a KFC/roller disco/crackhouse/welfare office/taco shack/synagogue/aids infested shit storage. When some users tried to cleanse your website for the benefit of the general populace, you deleted them and sent your website into an even deeper hole.

3. More moderation is a bad idea. This place is hellish enough with one power/grey-goose craving madman wandering about, we do not need more. Furthermore, there are no effective ways to punish users. Ban them and they change their IPs, comment ban them and they make an alt just for commenting, delete their sites and you both destroy a part of your own website as well as lament when they make an alt to reupload their favorite sites.

4. Voting has always been, and will always be, flawed. It is easily manipulated and abused, and the majority of this site's users do just that. Voting cliques/circlejerks have pervaded your site to a dangerous point. The only users who can be expected to never join a voting circlejerk are Umfuld (because no one likes him), and the members of the Moon Crew (because we are a shining beacon of light in a field of rioting minorities). There is no way to prevent the voting system from being abused, you just have to live with it.

So max... What do you feel when you log in these days and see what your once great website has become?

When you look back at the successful battles you've had with Dustin Diamond, Ebaum, Sega and Scientology, do you find it ironic that your once (I assume) proud site has been ruined by the very free speech and copyright principles you fought so hard for in the beginning?

When you see the U&C splattered with anti-Semitic/racist moonman sites does it burn you that through it all this is how you're making money off the site, or do you just secretly smile all the way to the bank knowing that you're getting the last laugh on these kids? Is that your little "eff you" back to them?

I have no idea what you want from this site going forward and have no idea why you allow this easy to moderate stuff to continue?

We can debate all day long about different reasons why we all think the site has taken a turn, but surely this part of it is easy.

Are you making that much money off moonman that you just can't bring yourself to shut it down? You seem to keep threatening to wipe these kids out, but never do.

Why?

Dear Mr. Goldberg,

I -- and I trust I am speaking for many other YTMND'ers here -- would really like to know what was the motivation behind the great transformation of YTMND that took place on 4/1/2010. I cannot really comprehend how could you destroy the beautiful old design that stood the test of time and was so much liked for over 3 years. Even if the new design has some good new aspects, WHAT WAS WRONG WITH THE OLD DESIGN?! *Breathes heavily*

God bless

Also, I've opted out of participating in any panels and will avoid wearing a name-tag for most of the conference.

I kind of predicted this whole "moon man" epidemic for quite some time now. Even back in the day, the websites were becoming so bad that I didn't even care anymore, which is why I completely lost interest in the site. I thought this place would still be pumpin' when I came back yesterday, but it just seems to be the same from when I last left. Believe it or not, FORGOT POLAND and MARV were probably the most unique fads to come out, because in my opinion, I think it takes more work to completely destroy a site using ear rape and distortion edits than to make one simple fourest edit to a movie site to complete some dumbass joke. We need more sites like MARV.

Dear Mr. Goldberg,

Can you make it so that whenever someone posts a bad word (in a comment or in a site), it gets replaced with the following string of symbols: !@#$
?

If not, then why not?

Sincerely,

So max, why do you still keep this site up? It can't be for the money. This site gets maybe hit by like 1k people a day at best. You obviously hate the user base here. You update the news and the contests at a rate of like once a year. That shows a bit of contempt. I can't say that I blame you. This site had the potential to become something great. A place where people could express themselves freely in any way they want without any censorship regardless of the content. Instead it turned into a cestpool of the lowest forms of scum on the internet. I guess that says something about humanity or something. It looks like the experiment failed. I say just shut it down. Right now all it is, is an unfunny legal liability for you.

Hi buds,

Just a quick note to let you know I'll be attending the Internet again this year. If I can arrange it, I hope to give out some updates there, but I'm not promising anything.

That's all.
