Bizarro: You're mistaken. Fry actually passed on cloning the Seymour when the professor mentioned that Seymour died at the age of 11. He was much younger than that when Fry was frozen, so Fry assumed Seymour had forgotten about him and moved on with his life. The revelation that Seymour never did either of those things is the horrible crushing depression we see here.

There is a legend in Japan of a dog who did the same thing. I forget the name of the dog, but they have a monument of him in downtown Akibahara(?). Whenever friends get together they always meet at that monument. I'm guessing that legend is where the idea for this episode of Futurama stemmed from.

I'll admit it, I cried when I saw this episode. It really was sad. And yes, it probably is based off the story of Hachiko (the dog whom has the statue in Japan) Here's to hoping for some effing closure with the new season.
