Carbon dating is quite accurate when one does it correctly. However, mishaps happen and they're widely publicized.

Of course, we have other ways of dating the age of objects that can be used to either correct or simply strengthen a carbon-dating result. In either case, the carbon dating works just fine except in certain situations.
