I am not an elitist anti-fad YTMNDer, and I believe that some fads and memetic humor are often what make YTMND as funny as it is. That being said, I don't really see the humor of this fad or even a reason for it to exist.

The reason this "fad" exists is because more than one person thought the same thing was funny and saw potential for a series of humurous and similar sites thereby creating what people call fads.
