is to say that there are no barriers to entry. Sorry, but that's obviously false, and you even mention why. Infrastructure. There are few companies, and at the moment their services are for sale. While Network Neutrality may not be the right answer, perfect competition is not even close to being in place in this market, so the government must watch the telecom companies closely.

Capitalism espouses the virtues of free market competition. Unfortunately, like democracy, it rarely is possible. Thus, the government must regulate it to ensure that the social optimum and the private optimum are balanced. While this is never possible to be measured exactly, you can be sure that whatever is best for a company's profit margin is not best for society. In perfect competition, there are no profits. Wherever you see profits you see the failure of perfect competition, but you also see the success of a company's ingenuity, sometimes with a negative overall effect.

Before you lies the greatest home of man! The walls of YTMND, dreams of liberty gave birth to the only justice this world has ever known. Today we fight... We fight! Those who have fallen, and those who we love. The sons and daughters, mothers and fathers, who watch over us now. The end that lies ahead is uncertain, the triumph of our spirit will live on in the heart of every righteous man!

Wow... ok so I just skimmed through the comments cause I didn't really have an opinion on NN yet. I'm still not sure; but I must say that dunesw64 is making a lot more sense than anyone else. He's the only one making logical arguments. Also, comicmasterajd keeps telling him to stop posting but all he's doing is responding to comments / questions people leave for him. My conclusion: Dunes wins, site gets 1.

For something to change a new law must be put into place. As I understand it we are looking at a law to protect net nutrality not one to eliminate it. NN already exists. So I do fear this will have other effects. But the Internet experts I know support it so my fears seem to be unfounded.

Government regulation = the opposite of freedom. Let the companies be free to do as they wish, and then the people will decide if they want to pay for it or not, or if they want to start up their own ISP and offer a better deal, and make a fortune doing so. THAT's freedom.

I have a relatives that were worked to death in the steal mills of the 20th century. A friend of mine has a father who died in a coal mining incident, and where then given a full week to leave company housing. More than that, in my own lifetime i've seen enough repugnant abuses of power in our society to know that your freedom isnt free if its owned by someone else, you have to pay.
October 2nd, 2007
(0)
A company does not have your freedom in its charter. It's sole purpose by law is to maximis profit for the shareholders. Men like J.P. Morgan, and others made their fortunes working people to death by the thousands, and that wasn't that long ago my freind. People just have short memories. IS THIS THE FREEDOM YOU WANT!? It's very telling of the Republican hegemony that a guy who thinks the Internet is a series of tubes runs the Senate committee that regulates the internet, someone who thinks that global warming is "the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people" is head of the Senate environmental committee, and a senator who's the biggest tool of lobbyists is used to reform the lobbying laws (Stevens, some dude from Oklahoma whose name I forget right now, and Santorum, respectively). The Senate wants corporate sponsorship and that's why they hate net neutrality. Good info YTMND and great song.

This is true, completely true. To put it in relative terms, imagine the internet on your cell phone. You know how they make you pay for sh*t like sh*tty MP3 ring tones and tiny *ss "wallpapers" that are jpegs you could get free from 30 seconds on google image search? The whole f*cking internet would be like that. Sites like this wouldn't exist, and there'd be a pay service for EVERYTHING. This is a wet dream for the ISPs, and I'm sure they're willing to give our congressmen a nice taste of the money for their vote. I don't know about any of you, but I don't want to pay for more sh*t than I have to already. Net Neutrality ftw!

This is the truth. If a law eliminating Network Neutrality is passed the internet as we know it will be destroyed. What needs to be done is nothing, keep the internet the way it is. THAT is Network Neutrality, not some "law" made by fools who don't know the difference between a corporate Intranet and the public Internet. I, being a Linux user, am particularly concerned about this as any number of companies could pay to slow down, or in the worst case scenerio, prevent people from downloading Linux distrib

I just want to remind people that you need to be aware of your online gaming being taken away as well. Those online MMORPGs take a lot of bandwidth and will most likely be shut down or SLOWED WAY DOWN if net neutrality is taken away. Think about it. Also, it goes further than playing games, it's your FREEDOM to see what you want WHEN you want. Not a commodity.
September 25th, 2006
(0)
I believe in protecting our internet's first amendment rights, but giving priority to certain companies isn't attractive to network performance if feasible at all. The internet does not necessarily work that way. Custom routing to provide preference can occur, but on the scale that ISPs use, it would a) cost a lot of money b) degrade performance c) a competitor would not do it so they would be f'd. Not to mention it would degrade the entirety of the internet because of the size of the protocols involved

Hey, dunes, for such a great debator, why don't you include the FIRST half of that PM I sent you? You know, the part that completely makes you look like an *ssh*l*e? Nope. Does everyone see what I'm dealing with here? Ah well. Now, I'm going to stop responding to you now, and being as this doesn't have anything to do with my NN site, I ask you to stop being irrelevant and spamming my comment section. Kid, you have some serious issues and I think it stems from the fact that you're a total imbecile with social issues. Like I've said, dimwit, I admit to being an *ssh*l*e. Pff. In the name of your write to freedom of speech, you would deny companies their own right to buy what they can afford?

if this happens lets promise to riot. it seems thats the only way people listen these days. (and no, not on the internet) for too long my generation has let things like this happen without taking a stand. We need to make some noise before the lights go out on freedom forever. its time we get off our *ss and do somthing. I'm going over to the UD campus and start putting up flyers. organized protests againts these lobbyest might allso help.

naming the companies involved might also help in embarising them. look if money can buy absolute power, than whats the point of having a democracy? lets make a list of all the activities usually identified with fashist regimes' and compare them with what our government has done in the last five years. secret prisons, tortured confessions, huge divide between rich and poor, paramilitary units, domestic spying, ...secret police anyone?
