he didn't get shot in the heart. He got shot in the chest. If he was shot in the heart he would have died instantly. But he had time to pull the barb out.

Yeah, he was hit in the heart. A shot to the heart isnt an INSTANT kill. it's just fast. They said he was only alive for a moment after pulling it out. That sounds about right to me.

if you get shot in the heart you lose your pulse...without a pulse none of your muscles would work therefore it would be impossible for him to pull the barb out from his heart before dieing.
