Btw, the Bible printing in Voltaire old house is a christian urban legend that started in the US. That article from wikipedia that you linked was obviously written by a christian who heard the story and decided to write it down as fact without even researching it first. In fact, that article directly contradicts the wikipedia article on Voltaire, which states that is house was never sold to the Geneva Bible Society.
It just doesn't make any sense - if there was a god who wanted to save people/be friendly/etc why would he eternally judge them based on how they lived for 40 years. Your references to court cases is misleading. Many of the accounts, when looked at in detail, would probably be too contradictory to be used as references. Way to talk about the judicial system of your own country using only the descriptive "we", as if everyone on the Internet is from your country.

So this man's proof of the afterlife is a few people wishing they'd found Christ while they're dying? So then proof of the absence of god would be to find the opposite?
What argument is made by this YTMND, and where would one 'refute' it? It's a subjective opinion or two polished up to support the view of the author by affirmation, not by proof.

i appreciate the (what looks like quite a bit) of effort, buuuut, telling us that people don't like dying, isn't going to help us know anything more.
when researching this, did you find a lot of examples of people dying and talking about being in heaven? theres probably not as many, since, you know, they'e dying a painful death (if it's like these ones). but that would be interesting to here.

Spend your whole life being afraid of what you are not sure exists. If there is a god I am sure that being a good person while in the flesh is enough to earn a peaceful resting place and if it is not enough then who wants to be a part of it anyway. I have a better idea, concentrate on your life at hand, be a good person and take care of your loved ones, make your life now a living heaven.
Then if you are right the afterlife will just be icing on the cake.
You would think that Christians (a once persecuted religion) would have more religious tolerance for believers of other faiths as well as non-believers. You would think. Only in America would such a lazy religion be perpetuated. "Believe and you will be saved..." How about "try to be a good person"... that'd probably be a better one. If "Do Not Lie" was a commandment you wouldn't have this republican fund raiser called Christianity.
I'm a Catholic and while I do believe in demons, possession, Satan, and Hell, I think you're approaching other people in a manner that completely turns them off to what you're trying to say. I'd recommend CS Lewis' "Mere Christianity" to see how an atheist became a believer. Using scare tactics to get people to convert doesn't elicit a true conversion--ideally you want people to belive something in their hearts, not do something out of fear. This has a good message, but its delivery is counterproductive.
Also Whetstone, apologies for saying that it was you who was belittling other people's views in the Pale Blue Dots comments section. To clarify, I think many people construe this as belittling their views-and also a good deal of commenters on both sides of the argument are doing just that to each other. I admire what you're trying to do for Christ-but like I said, I just think there are better ways to go about it.
Interesting to say the least. And thankfully you didn't use the EON8/Satan Rises music, which I was expecting. The text did go a bit too fast but it was very well made and interesting to read. I liked it, serious YTMNDs are a welcome change from the usual YTMND formula of "text, picture, sound".
+5 for skill in production, music and theme, even though I don't believe that non-believing in Christianity will force Hell upon you. Being a jerk in life will get you Hell, not a religious choice.

I give this site credit not because I see any religious importantnce, but because it made me look like Volitare. An interesting guy, to be sure, and way ahead of his time in a lot of thinking. However, his arrogence and hatred of anyone of African decent irredeemably marred his character in my eyes, even if it was a product of the times.

Alot of the critics [certainly not all] have just as valid of points as you do. The mysteries that lie within the universe are far too vast, too infinate and too far beyond our simple means of reasoning,logic and understanding that is is impossible for any human being, past or present to begin to grasp the meanings and purposes of life. Furthermore,humans will forever try to understand that in which they are incapable of constructing withing their own minds,because the idealogies and beliefs held to one may contradict the dephire of another. whether or not you agree with the content it's a good ytmnd. But whose to say which path is the one to salvation? Is it Christianity? The horrorifying prospect of death would make anyone's mind go on the fritz, and these people happened to die in particularly long and painful ways. They were not in a proper state of mind, nobody is when they are that close to death, so we can't really take there pained gibbering as OMFG HELFIRE! I'm sure many more athiests died with out pleading to God for salvation.

Creepy music and cries of "infidel" don't carry merit whetstone. In addition, you lack one very key ability, the ability to read a book. If you knew anything about history, you would know that the Christian Church did not have a hell until the late 400s. The inception of this idea was in order to curb rapidly falling recruitment rates within the Church. Before there was the fire and brimstone you know as "hell", there was "sheol". This was, and still is, a hebrew term.
To continue... It's a Hebrew term that, in its original form, referred to a cold dark place you went to when you died, regardless of who you were and how you lived you life. It was a metaphor for death. Sheol is quite frequently translated in modern bibles as "hell". This is irresponsible and incorrect. Whetstone, you have to understand that your zeal is not welcome. The fact that its a book about a message of love and not one of "oh look im so right!", just goes to illuminate your own lack of knowledge.
To push this concept even further, the Egyptians are the first culture to ever have an afterlife with fire and brimstone. It wasn't even a punishment, it was a trial for the soul. To give you a few more tid-bits to munch on... Jews were polytheistic throughout most of the time period of the biblical scripture, the god-men Horus and Dionysus lived almost identical lives to Jesus of Nazareth but preceeded him by thousands of years, the real Satan of the Christian Bible isn't Lucifer, it's Samael.
I'm just shocked at your behavior Whetstone. You truly lack understanding about Christianity. It is a religion based on love and understanding. Instead of loving your brothers and sisters, you treat them like they are below you. While I may not be a Christian, I have an understanding that surpasses 99.999% of the Christians I've dealt with. It's pretty crazy what you can come to understand when you, ya' know, actually read the Bible.

You really sort of prove the atheist point with this; people need religion because of fear and confusion, to explain the unknown. In the face of death, everything sounds like a good idea because what have you got to lose? you repent because its not worth it not to, because having a priest by your side makes death less frightening and terrible. Still, this is pretty cool to view.
Usually I'd have given the slideshow a chance, watched it, and then 1'd it. Chances are I disagree with it, and as shog said, people on their death bed often turn to god in their last moments in case there's even the slightest chance they might go to hell without doing so. At that point in their lives (meaning, the end), their dignity, respect, and beliefs no longer hold any value to them. They may not think there's a heaven or hell, but because they'll find out soon enough, they decide not to take chances.
This kind of thing should be left on the front porch of a Georgian trailor home. You're not going to hell if you aren't christian (because hell doesn't exist, it was just made up to scare people into submission), God is not a spoiled angry child as he's portrayed in the book of (mostly) fairy tales called The Bible, Jesus was not a frail pasty white man (he was a carpenter ((thus probably ripped)) and a Jew, plus he boned his wife Mary Magdalen every night), and he didn't have super powers. When you die your eyesight fails. This is why it looks like you fall into a pit because the peripheral vision goes first. On top of that, guess what? Dying hurts! I don't remember the verse, but I believe there's a passage in the bible that says "Judge not, lest ye be judged." My main problem with Christianity is that there are far too many Christians who believe the bible doesn't apply to them. I should know, I was almost married to one. If Christianity is real, then I fully expect to see you burning in hell for your bullsh*t.

Hi, I'm new to YTMND. Maybe someone would like to explain to me why "extreme racism" is an example of something not permitted, but this site--in which the creator's point is to claim that people who don't happen to be Christians will *literally* die painful deaths and then suffer for an indeterminately long time, possibly eternity--is permitted. Unverifiable stories exploit or even mock the fear of dying old men...to do what? Denigrate all other belief systems? This is no better than "extreme racism" at all
I agree with nuricat, im going to be a pastor. I openly said the use of the word "infidels" should be used sparinly, ESPECIALLY in a public setting.
