HOLY SH*T!! THATS AMAZING!!! im getting right to it.
September 22nd, 2006

Hydrogen? You... can just go buy hydrogen, somewhere, I don't know where but somewhere. A Hydrogen bomb is the simplest Fusion bomb in which 2 atoms of hydrogen are forced into 1 helium atom resulting in huge amounts of energy and radiation. Thats a "balloon." Oh well.
September 5th, 2007
(-2)
Or I can just fill the balloon up with Helium and have the same effect.
September 5th, 2007
(0)
helium isn't explosive.
September 22nd, 2006
(0)
5! now i must find a more devious use for all this hydrogen

Igniting hydrogen =/= hydrogen bomb
September 22nd, 2006
(0)
lol, hydrolosis. We did this in AP Chem with fancy electrical equipment.
September 22nd, 2006
(0)
This reminds me, though - what happened to the unneeded O2 that gets formed by the reaction (lol @ forgetting everything in said AP Chem class beyond making hydrogen and smoke bombs)
September 22nd, 2006
(0)
I dont know, im assuming if O2 is produced, it goes into the balloon with the hydrogen, and thus makes the reaction more explosive than it would be with just straight hydrogen. I havent actually sat down and figured out EXACTLY whats going in that bottle yet because all my chem 12 knowledge dissappeared the day after my provincial exam...

NaHCO3(s) -> Na+(aq) + HCO3-(aq) HCO3-(aq) -> H+(aq) + CO3-(aq) 2H+(aq) + e- -> H2(g) Basic electrolysis. Also works with water, but higher voltages needed, and also produces oxygen, so need a different set up.

wow... good paragraphs..
September 22nd, 2006

Cool, but the name is a bit of a misnomer. If it were a real hydrogen bomb, you wouldn't be around to make this ytmnd. Fiv'd.

Very informative, the more you know! And I have a bit of a feeling that within the next month or two we will see a news post come up saying something along the lines of "Teen suffers second degree burns from making hydrogen bomb-like baloons, following instructions on a popular webside."

What the hells with the praises. This isn't even an efficient way to create hydrogen. Furthermore, this isn't even dangerous! There are MUCH more volatile substances you could play with. This is a BALOON. GD Ya'll get too excited too quickly.

pretty cool. -1 for music though, its annoying. whats the point of the baking soda? i guess it's to increase conductivity? tap water is probably quite conductive by itself so if that is the case the baking soda is extraneous; you could probably also just use regular table salt which would be more conductive (you could use smaller amounts) and probably more readily available. if that's not what the baking soda is for then i'd love to know what its purpose is. good job
September 22nd, 2006
(0)
The little transformers that come with model train sets work well for this.
September 22nd, 2006
(0)
by the way to the people asking about the oxygen, it goes into the baloon. we know the density of hydrogen is lower than that of air, so if it were hydrogen alone the balloon would float. in the video we can see it's clearly on the ground.
September 22nd, 2006

so gay, so many other bombs that you can make which are better. so gay that sexymofo even 5'd it as proof

Alternatively you can just get a tank of hydogen gas and fill a balloon with it
September 22nd, 2006
(0)
...Or you could just get a balloon, then steal a canister of hydrogen gas from yer local school lab technician >:-D
September 22nd, 2006

thats so cool!
September 22nd, 2006

Do you have any idea how dangerouse that is? hydrogen pretty much burns as soon as it touches air
September 22nd, 2006

I'm only putting this in my favorites so i remember to try it later, dont flatter yourself.

September 22nd, 2006
(0)
I don't understand why you need to add the baking soda. A current through water produces H2 and O2 (because it is H2O :duh:). Is it a catalyst or something? I saw this done in my highschool lab (without baking soda).
September 22nd, 2006
(0)
very irresponsible -- someone stupid kid is going to hurt themselves
September 22nd, 2006
(0)
OK, tap water DOES conduct electricity, but it doesnt do so very well. It only conducts electricity because of the small amounts of minerals that are dissolved in it. Distilled water, DOES NOT conduct electricity. What causes the water to be conductive, are the ions that are formed when ionic compounds are dissolved in it (in this case Na+ and HCO3-) The positive ions flow towards the cathode, and the negative ions flow towards the anode.
September 22nd, 2006
(1)
All that for a flash of flame. Woo.... Hoo....
September 22nd, 2006

I can see it in the head lines, "12 year old sets house on fire after being retardant"

Isn't there a difference between distilled water and deionized water?
September 22nd, 2006
(-1)
ARE YOU STUPID? Good job, the FBI will probobly bomb your house now. How would you feel if a terrorist used this site to create a bomb?
September 22nd, 2006
(-1)
You will now be indirectly responsible for 200 deaths :D
September 22nd, 2006
(1)
this is totally irresponsible. now the terrorists have hydrogen balloon technology. they'll come into these discos with a baloon and a barbeque lighter and scare the hell out of everyone with the noise it makes. and the blood is on your hands!
September 22nd, 2006

"for the love of f*cking christ, DO NOT use table salt, it liberates CHLORINE GAS which will kill you dead." nice to know lol

BIG BADA BOOM
September 22nd, 2006
(0)
That's some cool sh*t. So, the bigger the balloon the bigger the blast?
September 22nd, 2006
(0)
JBobek: Distilled water is water that has been evaporated, and then collected by condensation, and therefore it has no impurities dissolved in it (such as calcium and other things that get dissolved in common tap water) Deionized water, is produced by ion exchange, where the impure ions dissolved in the water are removed by passing it through an insoluble solid or gel which exchanges the ions from the solution to the exchanger. The result is the same thing, pure water with no impurities dissolved in it
September 22nd, 2006
(0)
Damn, anarchist. Throw that into a volcano and start your own religion. Good work.
September 22nd, 2006
(0)
Doesn't hydrogen have an invisible flame front?
September 22nd, 2006
(0)
I just narc'd on you. FBI, CIA, SWAT & Secret Service will be there shortly.
September 22nd, 2006
(0)
that's pretty cool
September 22nd, 2006
(0)
i wouldnt suggest filling up the balloon ALL THE WAY unless you have a long long stick to set it off with, it gets pretty f*cking loud when they are that big. I would also suggest you wear a welding glove or something like that when you set them off if you are making bigger ones. You might also want to put on some ear protection and goggles if you are standing really close to them
September 22nd, 2006
(0)
awesome f*cking tutorial
September 22nd, 2006
(0)
Sweet. Everyone loves explosions. Lol.
September 22nd, 2006

Kinda misleading title (I was hoping for an actual H-bomb), but this is still awesome enough to warrant a 5.
September 22nd, 2006
(0)
For the music, I was expecting something from U2's "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb." I watched the whole thing - that alone merits a 4. And yeah, you can't be held responsible. Watchi9ng this means we signed a liability e-waiver with our eyes.

"This YTMND is great. But how legal is this?" Not illegal at all. High school chemistry students do it all the time, but with proper electolysis equipment.

It's not a hydrogen bomb, it's just a balloon with hydrogen in it.
September 22nd, 2006

holy f*ck
September 22nd, 2006

Thank god the result isn't pure hydrogen gas. That ammount of pure hydrogen gas could level that garage. Btw, wouldn't it be better to just solder the wires on?
September 22nd, 2006
(0)
lol, Hindenburg.
September 22nd, 2006
(0)
divsky: Actually, if im correct, O2 gas is being produced as well, which makes the hydrogen even more explosive than it would be in its pure form.
September 22nd, 2006
(0)
and if you want to solder the connections, go right ahead. I however, like being able to disconnect the wires without cutting them, and having to solder them back on when i want to use it again.

September 22nd, 2006

^ DEADLY DEADLY DEADLY
September 22nd, 2006
(0)
well, all I can think of is using this in hitman: bloodmoney. Substitute these baloons in for some poor kids and then take em out from long range.
September 22nd, 2006
(0)
so deadly like i'll poison myself
September 22nd, 2006
(0)
oh, and for those who care, pure hydrogen gas is actually not flamable. Hydrogen is flamable between about 5% hydrogen to about 97% hydrogen. I would imagine the chemical process shown here produces more than 3% oxygen which would put hydrogen well within it's explosive range
September 22nd, 2006
(0)
I've done this before. For more fun, tape a plastic bottle (instead of a balloon) to the top of the hydrogen generator, fill it with gas, then light it. Home-made rocket FTW.
September 22nd, 2006
(0)
pingu: Yes, so deadly that it will f*cking kill you dead. This is why you MUST USE baking soda, and not table salt. If you use table salt, you will die :)

hmmm should i try this but with a 2 litre pop bottle and a 4 foot balloon?
September 22nd, 2006

lol, 20 gallon drum, 2 party-sized boxes of baking soda and a weather balloon! use something more remote than a lighter, though. .22 long rifle perhaps.

Get a truck load of those ballons and light a match and you've got a fat kid terrorist attack at your local school.
September 22nd, 2006

^meant balloons and if someone dies by accidently using table salt, I'd feel really bad. x_x
September 22nd, 2006

for those of you wondering if chlorine gas will kill you, it will and in a very painful way, it will burn away your lungs very slowly... so be careful not to do that please people

and for those who want to make bombs that make a bigger boom, look for the Anarchist Cookbook. Don't bother with the tech stuff in it, its mostly obsolete, and some other recipies contain potentially dangerous errors, still good to check into if you want to

Isn't it full of both hydrogen and oxygen? Also, I don't understand the purpose of the baking soda. Hydrogen can be made from just pure water and electricity.

Delbeano: Baking soda is the electrolyte. Pure water doesnt conduct electricity. Read all of my above comments, i explained this to someone else already

Pretty good, but hydrogen flames are near invisible to the naked eye - your balloon had a reddish flame.

your thinking of a small hydrogen flame, this is a large reaction that takes place very quickly and produces a quick flash of flame. If you watch the video in the site description, you can see that it takes place VERY quickly, and there is only a flame for a split second

Hypothetically, wouldn't it be perfectly safe to use table salt for chlorine production if you stopped the current well before you took off the balloon? Chlorine is heavier than air, so you'd have a ballon full of the gas and a bottle full of it. Disposing of the bottle could be problematic, but if proper precautions are taken (oxygen tanks), I don't see why this couldn't be used to gas the local prarie dogs.

I just use hydrochloric acid and tin foil, then run it through water to seperate the hydrogen but either way is good. 5'd for science!

pretty sweet, i could be wrong here but i remember my teacher saying something abotu makin it way more powerful by adding like 20% oxygen?ya o no?

thats just a balloon filled with hydrogen. a hydgrogen bomb splits atoms, yo.

I love how so many of you hippies compare a mini hindenburg to terrorism. The worst that will come of this will maybe be a trip to the ER fast-track because some jackass shocked themselves or swallowed a baloon before putting it on the bottle. This was an amusing YtMND compared to all the Brian Peppers bullsh*t most of you love. 5 Tubes for you.

Hmm, combine your candle experiment with this! Get the bottle and fill it with a little bit of water, enough so that it makes a supersaturated solution of HC03. Then, melt candle wax into the bottle, mixing thoroughly. Then close off the bottle, plug in the power and wait a while. The electricity should form a good amount of oxygen, and the resistance should melt the wax and ignite the hydrogen. The heat from the hydrogen should vaporize the wax, and with the extra oxygen, the parrafin will be able to fully combust. Modify these instructions a bit, and you should essentially have a high explosive. W00T.

So i made this today, but the balloon only got as big as a babys head, im thinkin if i use a 12 volt adapter instead of 9 ill get a bigger balloon. But this is really cool, obviously it looks a lot cooler at night. For more info Homemade Hydrogen

"this is the perfect site to show how many retards are on YTMND. anyone that took 10th grade chemistry knows how to do this... failed" Highschool chemistry classes usually use lithium in water to produce the hydrogen gas, or just use it straight from a bottle. This really illustrates the imporatance of using DC current versus AC current.

^ when i was in high school, my teacher used zinc strips and HCL in a single replacement reaction for the H2 gas. This demonstrates an easy and safe way to produce H2 without any other harmful substances being used.

Also people, this is merely a hydrogen gas explosion it's a pretty small, containable flare, and all it does really is make a big noise. CALL THE FIRE DEPARTMENT!
