No, that is not how it got started, tin hat. A kid made a domain, wrote code and basically invented a medium around a single, out of context line from a movie. He didn't post an entire scene that is funnier when left perfectly alone and in the context of a classic comedy movie. This is the ytmnd equivalent of that f*cking annoying twat at everyone's school or job quoting his favorite parts from last night's Simpsons til the jokes are about as funny as obituaries.
Yea, I understand the frustration of seeing straight scenes posted, but think of the funny fads that often come out of these. someone's gonna paste a different head, have him say something else, ect. Without the annoying straight scenes we never would had Mad Dad, or my hair is looking fabulous, IDK there's a bunch of fads that come out of these unedited things...
gr33nscr33n, what I meant is that the concept of this site isn't that different from "You're the Man Now Dog", "I Believe You Have My Stapler", or "Khaaaaaaan!". It's a similar idea, only expanded due to the availability of more resources (i.e., more allotted space for a single YTMND). So what if the the movie is famous and the person didn't cite it correctly? Max had no idea where the picture of Connery came from - he googled it. And for the longest time, Office Space and The Wrath of Khan were uncited.
paphan, your logic here demonstrates exactly why such a large percentage of very popular sites suck. There is a huge difference between ripping "Khann" from a scene that WASN'T supposed to be funny and simply reposting some else's joke. It's that simple. YTMND, when simply mimicking YouTube, Digg, CollegeHumor, etc is equally as lame. But when it is used a medium for creating something new, it's brilliant (or can be).
But whatever, I give up explaining such a simple point over and over. I mean, HTPAT is not only the most viewed site in ytmnd history, it's also voted solidly at about 3.5, despite massive dvs from loyal users...which tells you a lot about the people who don't get what makes this place more interesting than f*cking GifDump.
There's a huge difference between this site and Telemarketer. Telemarketer just goes on and on forever, and even though it's funny, it just takes so long that it loses its humor. This YTMND is what? Maybe 30 seconds? It has a setup and "punchline" and then it's over. And yes, the Khan scene wasn't supposed to be funny in the movie, but it has been ridiculed ever since the movie came out because of Shatner's overly dramatic acting. The scene had been reduced to a joke before the YTMND was ever made.
Similar thing goes for Stapler, except that was already a running joke throughout Office Space. You could also make the same case for 88 mph and 1.21 Jiggawatts. Yes, YTMND has original content that can be brilliant, but popular sites in the past - icons of YTMND - have taken existing jokes and simply transferred them to a new medium.
No, no. He's right mattdh12. I'm totally "jelous". I'm so "jelous" that I sit around all night trying to think of ways I can get famous here so that slightly sophisticated 4th graders will look up to me because I have NetFlix and I know how to use a gif editor. That's what I want to be known for in life. In fact, it is my aspiration to someday die ytmnd-famous so that they write on my tombstone "FOUND FUNNY SCENE. POSTED IT."
You keep saying "YTMND classics" like that means something. I'll repeat: your logic here demonstrates exactly why such a large percentage of very popular sites suck. REO Speedwagon is both classic and popular, David Hasselhoff is huge, Clay Aiken sells out show after show after show. John Tesh, Michael Bolton, Velvet Revolver...all incredibly popular. And they all suck.
I must agree with Gr33n, I'm f*cking tired of things like this being accepted on YTMND. "You're the man now dog" is a line that wasn't really meant to be funny, but was made so via a YTMND layout. "I believe you have my stapler" was meant to be funny, but it's a quick, single-sentence-line instead of a large joke. The only time something liek this would make a decent YTMND is when it's soemthing that few people have seen before. Gr33n has helped me see the light, and i hope more poeple do too.
