Desalinization plants are expensive, though. Both to build and to run. At least according to Sim City 2000. Easier just to put in a bunch of water pumps.

Actually it's the energy cost of distillation which is dismally high, and unfortunately solar heat collectors don't provide high enough energy quality (temperature and stability) to use for distillation.

After removing a fair amount of drinkable water the remainder is a super saline solution that is discharged back into the ocean.
