In 1997, the superflat deconstructive independent manga GOD: THE GOLD DOG was released, to mixed reception. Retracing the steps of the once monumental work that drew the outline of the Enormous Cyborg Hound genre, GOD: THE GOLD DOG interspersed introspective, psychoanalytical sequences with slick action sequences containing new, edgy designs based on the cultural heritage of the post-war Japanese entertainment industry. According to the more critically inclined consumers, GOD: THE GOLD DOG asked the enternal question: Did the Enormous Cyborg Hound story of the golden years take too much for granted?
