it was actually inspired from 4chan, during the first age of ytmnd when more much people were on here than 4chan. people forgot this fact during the second age of ytmnd when 4chan became mainstream and this site waned in popularity, and everyone announced their hatred of 4chan to be "edgy". i guess this is the 3rd age when no one gives a shit
