Actually, those replaced tunes you were talking about were in the PC version. Not talking about a ROM, but a Sonic collection released for the PC that had Sonic 3. The last 3 stages had the music replaced.

I knew there was a reason I liked that Sonic music so much as a kid...

Knuckles' theme (along with the mid-boss theme) in Sonic 3 also seems to be based off of MJ (There's even the MJ "ahh" and "c'mon" in the mid-boss theme, IIRC).

All of the "suspicious" songs are only on the Genesis version.. and I think they were done by an American artist. The rest of the soundtrack is a completely different style. The original version with the original music is available for the PC version.
