Everytime I think of the universe my head hurts :( It's too big for any mind to comprehend.

One advantage of being a Nerd is that when you see this kind of stuff, you just wonder what Han and Chewie are doin right now.

Pictures look a little strange at 1024x768 in FireFox... Starts after "13 Billion Light Years." I can still read it, it's just odd.
2006-09-13 08:16:04

Nothing new tough. Did you ever wonder why every culture in the world had thousand of years ago the swastika as symbole? Because it symbolizes the galaxy, if you look closely. Thats the Roots of all cultures from the beginning. But enough of conspiracy theories ;) Good ytmnd 5'd

Actually, I stumbled across this image on Digg about 6 months ago, and it's been my wallpaper ever since. Ive been meaning to make this for a while now, when I saw that Size of Our World YTMND it reminded me.
2006-09-13 08:22:25

thats pretty siq.
2006-09-13 08:22:50

Yeah. I think we all knew this, but have'nt had anything tell us it yet. We've all seen the photos, but not the numbers.
2006-09-13 08:23:57

I went on a camping trip recently, way out away from the city lights....you could see so many stars it was amazing. When you think that all the spaces BETWEEN the stars contains THIS....it blows your mind.
2006-09-13 08:23:57

Great stuff! Keep up the good work.
2006-09-13 08:24:18

Astronomy rulez! No but 4real, good job.
2006-09-13 08:26:13

congrats on the music choice
2006-09-13 08:26:48

It would take Picard's lol, enterprise at warp 9.6 over 1000 years just to reach The Andromeda Galaxy. Even Sci-fi is pathetic compared to the real universe.

lol 4 month exposure time... daang hubble needs to take more and more photos like that, amazing.
2006-09-13 08:30:59

Sadly, Hubble will burn up in the Earth's atmosphere in 2011.

Anyone recognize this song from Coast to Coast AM with Art Bell??

2007-04-19 15:03:31

No, but I recognize this song from Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, on Flashback FM. All the music on that station is by Giorgio Moroder. That's not a bad thing, but in Grand Theft Auto III, all the music was from the Scarface soundtrack. PUSH IT TO THE LIMIT.
2006-09-13 08:40:07

really enjoyed this

smoothmedia you really impressed me with this. Excellent use of music as well. I am gonna show this to my friends lol. FAV
2006-09-13 08:52:39

IE auto-resizes images (A feature I disable). It's not Better at displaying this stuff, you just don't know what the hell is up. Turn up your desktop resolution to something more... modern.
2006-09-13 08:53:16

Oh.. and uh... "There ain't no aliens".... right...
2006-09-13 08:54:15

We are so small....if our planet ceased to exist, who would care? not a soul in the universe....LOL. love it man. you never cease to live up to my expectations as a ytmnd observer/judge.

ohh drroooool oranges... juicy goodnesss
2006-09-13 08:55:19

Hard to imagine that there ISNT life somewhere else in the Universe, probably in our own Galaxy. However, we will likely never know due to the ridiculous distances. I bet it will be another 1000 years before we reach another solar system.

2007-07-18 05:24:14

I AM FROM GLIESE 581 C YOU *SSH*LE
2006-09-13 08:56:01

wow, win for science!
2006-09-13 09:02:39

That's such an amazing picture it deserves a 5 just for the url in the description, but the facts make this a lot of fun.
2006-09-13 09:09:57

Also, if we could get an ultra-powerful telescope on the far end of the universe in the distant future, we might be able to zoom in on earth to view scenes from the past. This is because the light takes so many years to reach the far ends of universe that it could be light from thousands or millions of years ago.
+1

2007-04-07 01:08:07

but thats no better than just taking a picture from a satellite in earths orbit and wating a few years. Plus, then it has to be sent back via radio communication and since radio waves travel the speed of light it would be gay as sh*t . but cool concept
2006-09-13 09:10:54

So there could be life-forms viewing earth right now, but only seeing early earth (volcanoes and such) and therefore assuming there's no life forms here yet.
2006-09-13 09:11:24

but probably not.
2006-09-13 09:15:15

Great music.
2006-09-13 09:16:17

oh, and congrats smoothmedia for anoter winner YTMND

Our lives are truely meaningless in any reasonable sense of the word.
2006-09-13 09:24:08

Sweet! You make my space nerd heart warm and supple.
2006-09-13 09:24:16

grab a snickers... damn, this makes me feel like calling in "insignifigant" to work today
2006-09-13 09:29:41

Win.
2006-09-13 09:30:33

the far reaches of space FTW!!!
2006-09-13 09:31:43

Thankfully someone with talent made this, otherwise it could've been painful. Kudos to you for not sucking and also for reminding me of how much real estate I own. Those big galaxies are going to sell for a fortune. As soon as someone figures out how to bend space-time.
2006-09-13 09:33:19

Also, if you like making people who have never taken a science class feel dumb, you could do one on special relativity and TIME TRAVEL, although people would probably just say that you were joking...
2006-09-13 09:34:48

yeah so jimmy neutron was right. moving on...
2006-09-13 09:35:16

and roc, i dont think that would work, that defy's physics. If you were to go that far in space, then by the time you looked back you would be looking back at the time that you had pretty much left at...therefore you wouldn't be able to see the past, unless there were means by which we could travel that far in such a small matter of time. Who knows if that will ever happen though.
2006-09-13 09:35:50

Pretty sweet.
2006-09-13 09:42:03

Effing awesome. Some of the later slides i cant see the top text. Maybe thats just my browswer tho..
2006-09-13 09:49:55

Neat, made me feel small and look is up on wikipedia. Keep up the cool sites.
2006-09-13 09:52:46

f*cking craaaaaaaaaazy
2006-09-13 09:57:04

wow we just saw this picture in astronomy the other day, i have a quiz this morning
2006-09-13 09:57:30

good but fix image so all the text is readable
2006-09-13 10:03:03

anybody who believes we're alone in the universe is an ignorant f*ck
2006-09-13 10:04:18

now apply M-theory and everything gets that much smaller =)
2006-09-13 10:05:46

Holy f*cking sh*t!! What a mind-blowing find!
2006-09-13 10:09:17

Is there a page with all this information on wikipedia? Can't find it.
2006-09-13 10:13:49

I was all "deep field" on this, and it was! nice.
2006-09-13 10:14:02

This was a huge spoonful of yummy awesomeness. Unfortunately will I ever live enough to explore space? Probably not. :(
2006-09-13 10:17:27

The opening picture with the comparsion of VV CEPHEI and the other stars, where can i find that? I did find a couple of similar pictures featuring our solarsystem up to Antares but i cant find the other pictures in that series.
2006-09-13 10:17:33

surprised and kinda disappointed we haven't re-entered the "existence of god" debate here... 'cause this is a perfect place to pull out my devastating "Just a coincidence ? You just have no sense of scale" argument.
2006-09-13 10:18:16

yep... now i feel insignificant
2006-09-13 10:19:45

This reminds me of that animaniacs song about how utterly tiny and insignificant we are compared to the universe.
2006-09-13 10:28:40

lol, astronomy
2006-09-13 10:29:31

That was one of the coolest things I have ver seen.
2006-09-13 10:31:55

nicely done.
2006-09-13 10:33:55

lol, grab a snickers
2006-09-13 10:38:19

Awesome site... and yes, now that you mention it I do recognize the Coast to Coast music. Now all I need is an appearance by Richard Hoagland to feel complete.
2006-09-13 10:41:53

OMG Universe is big, lol! OMG my testicles fell down!

HOLY F*CK!!!
2006-09-13 10:46:50

I love it. You should check out "Cosmic Voyage," which is an imax film that also demonstrates how huge the universe is. Plus, it's got Morgan Freeman (lol).
2006-09-13 10:48:57

lol, hubble deep field XD
2006-09-13 10:49:06

My head hurts.
2006-09-13 10:51:04

AMAZING! I love it.
2006-09-13 10:51:52

It'll get a five if I get to see it while I'm high.
2006-09-13 10:53:36

2006-09-13 10:54:14

i love you
2006-09-13 10:55:48

That's awesome. I was still expecting NEDM when it said, "Here's what it saw".
2006-09-13 10:55:49

I feel so, insignifigant :( The unfunnny truth about how meaningless we all are!?!
2006-09-13 10:57:59

The universe is always an amzing thing to research. I once got to look at the Andromeda galaxy through an observatory telescope and I was immediately tripped out. Xenu, we await your return (lol)
2006-09-13 11:01:13

roq: in order to view images from that long ago, the telescope would have to be traveling many times the speed of light, and probably be a retarded distance away to catch light from that long ago. If you wanted to see an image from yesterday, imagine how far that light traveled in 24 hours, thats where the telescope would have to be.
2006-09-13 11:01:18

We had better find some f*cking aliens out there.
2006-09-13 11:01:35

I waited for funny... and it never came... you make me sad

Also, the facts presented here make you think. But they go by so quickly; you don't have time to think about them fully. These are huge concepts. Slow it down.
