I tried the laso, paintbrush in every single mode (color, lighten, etc etc etc). As for the fill at < 100%, I end up with it killing all of the shadows, or being too dull (dark grey shirt/black pants are not helping). And as for using masks or such, I'm not very experienced with that to know what I'm doing
