The reality is relations with the Russian Federation deteriorate to the point of open conflict, whilst the United States remains embroiled in the First Iranian War, leaving the European Union alone to fend off the Bear. Of course, the Eurof*gs are helpless: the Russians have had decades to rearm and with the assistance of regimes like Belarus and the client state of Ukraine, quickly advance into the Baltic States and Rumania.

A holding action by the Bulgarians stops the Russian advance north of the Danube, resulting in the first release of chemical and tactical nuclear weapons. The pace quickens as the Russians advance into Poland, however the Europeans can no longer mount effective resistance to the Russian onslaught. The decision to utilize strategic nuclear weapons is made, leaving Minsk, Kiev, Moscow and most major urban centers as radioactive slag.

However, it is a pyrrhic victory: the Russian retaliation reduces the whole swath of western Europe to irritated glass.
