Go watch "Hour of the Wolf." It's one of his more obscure ones, but it's so great. Very Lynchian.

all the greats are slowly fading..Hitchc*ck, Capra, Kurosawa, Kubrick, and now Bergman. Polanski will follow soon. Films are doomed. make way for the Michael Bay's and Paul W.S. Anderson's of the new film generation ::shudder:: Anyway, Best RIP site ever

Dont worry, cause great films will never stop being made. Go check "The Lives of the Others", for example. You wouldnt believe that it is a 2006 movie. A new generation of artists is coming. And remember: Cronemberg, Lynch, Tarantino and many others are still there.

Fountain might be one of my favorite movies ever. I have 3 freinds who count it in their top 5, and a few who say "worst movie ever." Very divisive, but still one of my favorites.

Tarantino doesn't belong with those other names you mentioned. Yes Pulp Fiction was influential, but he is too caught up with nostalgia to actually make his own aesthetic statement.
+1

2007-07-30 20:35:44

The Fountain was amazing. Not for everyone, but it was moving. When I show people Aronofsky movies they either love 'em or hate 'em.

2007-07-30 20:47:12

About Tarantino: I think that, even if he wants his movies to look like older movies he loved back in the days, they are totally different affairs. Nobody can deny that Kill Bill was eclectic and unique, even if it contained a whopping load of references to other movies. It was an awesome film, and the proof that simple, clever entertainment still works in a theater.

2007-07-30 20:48:52

I mean, who cares if his movies dont have a deep meaning? They're extremely entertaining, and IMHO it is far harder to entertain than everything else, in a film.

2007-07-30 21:45:23

This site was very pretentious. You said that the movies he made were masterpieces, but I don't know. And it was very pretentious of you to just post one looping scene of some guy from his movie as if that were all you needed to do to honor his memory. And... etc. It's pretentious to do anything. I'm so pretentious that I believe that the oxygen in the air is for me to breathe, even when I'm not out of breath. Bring on the pretentiousness. Lynch is 10x as pretentious as Aranofsky, and I love him too.

no love for Martin Scorsese? I admit a lot of his work is garbage but at his best he makes Tarantino look like an art school dropout with ADD. Then again, I think Requiem for a Dream is horrible, so maybe I have bad taste in movies.

2007-07-30 22:35:05

in before someone claims I was saying Tarantino directed Requiem for a Dream. I re-read my comment and it kind of looks like I think that. I'll shut up now.

pi good, requiem bad

2007-07-31 03:11:02

is this the Aranofsky thread? when people ask my what my favorite movie of all time is, i usually tell them Requiem. but that's actually my second. my real favorite movie is Visitor Q, but they always ask me what the movie is about, and i don't really feel like telling them.

2007-07-31 03:17:07

Visitor Q is veeery good. But I prefer Audition.

2007-08-02 20:41:05

"But he is too caught up with nostalgia to actually make his own aesthetic statement." Funny that a YTMNDer would criticize Tarantino on these grounds. Your statement is correct, but that doesn't mean it isn't deeply ironic.
+1

2007-08-02 21:35:22

Just because someone is a YTMNDer doesn't mean they are responsible for all YTMNDs ever made. That's like saying that David Fincher makes terrible movies because Uwe Boll makes movies. Or saying that Daryl Palumbo can't sing because I just sang. That's silly. I've got pipes. Leaky pipes.
+1

2007-08-02 22:13:54

Improviser's top rated site (and one of the top rated YTMND's of all time) is a pretty good textbook case of Frederick Jameson-style postmodern pastiche. This is the essential criticism leveled against Tarantino, ie. his films are slick recontextualizations of tropes from other media, so my comparison and accusation of mild hypocrisy is not out of hand. You accuse me of formulating a false metonymy, and I call you a sophist of the first order. By the way, I love you, but please get the f*ck over yourself.

2007-08-02 22:59:39

Recontextualizing clips from various media, which is one of the primary thrusts of this website, is essentially post-modern. This is true...and not just of my site. Don't think that thought hasn't ever crossed my mind. It is a bit constricting to have to rely on what others have created, an essentially finite source, as your sources. Yes it would be preferable to create your own entirely new work..but unfortunately that is not always practical, given the enormous amount of time or money this may take.

2007-08-02 23:05:47

So using existing professionally recorded audio or video clips is just terribly convenient for the one-man show ytmnder isn't it? Now that doesn't mean in other artistic endeavours I leech material of others and am essentially a hack. Quite the opposite actually. YTMND is unique though...and I do consider this website a valid means of artistic expression, just as valid as any concert hall or art gallery. But comparing YTMND to a feature film (Tarantino) is a bit of a stretch. Also, fawkes.

2007-08-03 14:27:13

lol@tarantino.

2007-08-03 17:47:34

I should also note that I personally like really good postmodern recontextualizations. I think "Nothing Scares Worf" is one of the best things going on this site. But it is true that Tarantino and YTMND are much closer than most people realize.

2007-08-03 20:10:26

A bit more goes into a screenplay than into a ytmnd. A bit more goes into most scenes than goes into 99.9% of ytmnds. Now, some ytmnds rise above the level of your average scenes in a movie, but I think you'd have to compare a large collection of ytmnds to a tarantino film. The best comparison would be a series of ytmnds to a short, but Tarantino doesn't make many shorts. So, really, YTMND vs. Spike Jonze. Winner, Spike. Hands down. Sorry. That's just the way it is. Spike owns all of our grandmas.

2007-08-03 20:55:57

Don't know about Jonze, but I'll take his ex-wife in a minute. She can perform a postmodern recontextualization on my penis anytime. That didn't make any sense.

2007-08-03 22:20:49

Tarantino recreates cinematic styles that were themselves already campy to begin with. So he is essentially paying homage to inferior films, instead of forging new territory. To me this is completely different than YTMND-style recontextualization. We are pillaging sources while he is recreating them. Not to mention the fact that a film takes a whole crew thousands of hours to make...compared to a few hours to make a ytmnd...if that.

2007-08-03 22:30:01

What's with these automatic assumptions that because Tarantino is a fan of campy films that campy films are bad, campy film influenced styles are automatically bad, and Tarantino films are campy? I would not agree with any of those 3 assessments. Campy movies have their own plot devices to move stories along which I much prefer to most typical hollywood devices. And, honestly, is "I'm going to kill 200 people to save my girlfriend" really "higher art" than "I'm going to kill 200 people. Bitches."?

2007-08-03 23:32:37

Campy can be good if you're just looking for some light entertainment...but you can't really put it in the same conversation as Cronenberg and Lynch, who make films that transcend mindless entertainment.

2007-08-04 01:23:12

I've always felt like some filmmakers attempt to tell stories on both the literal level and on the figurative level, while Lynch merely does away with the literal. It's not necessarily "deep" unless you want to call it a "deep surface". There are no characters, there are only symbols. And, sometimes Lynch just completely does away with humor. I know it's not kosher to view humor as its own artistic element, but Tarantino has that going for him. Without humor, Kafka would be forgotten. And I love Kafka.

2007-08-04 04:00:47

Who calls Tarantino movies "campy" clearly hasnt seen jackie brown

2007-08-04 11:11:24

I have actually. But seriously, talking about Tarantino in the same thread as Bergman is a joke really. You can't really compare a man who spent his life in the theater and film and became a giant in the art film world to a guy who worked in a video store and decided to jot down some "clever" dialogue one day.

Well at least you put some effort into this. Memorial sites are just so... tacky.

2007-07-30 17:30:57

I dont usually make memorial sites. But this one, I had to do it, for two reasons: 1) Ingmar Bergman was a genious, and one of my favourite directors 2) Probably no one else would've made it, since most ytmnders are very ignorant on Non-American movies

agreeing with Improviser. this site has the "can I be in the smart club" vote. but I honestly think it's an objectively good tribute site even as tribute sites go. it's subtle, poignant, softspoken and well-executed, which are qualities most fans of Bergman value.

2007-07-31 01:45:01

I really loved that movie. Haven't seen any of his others. To go a little OT, I'd like to commend to everyone's attention Kurosawa's "Ikiru" - a movie which had me bawling like a little girl by the end. I'm absolutely serious - as hokey and corny as it sounds, Ikiru really touched my soul. One scene in particular, I had to watch a dozen times until the sun came up. It's not a samurai movie and no, Mifune is not in it. Please visit http://www.tv-links.co.uk/listings/4/4119 ( while the link is still working) to watch the entire movie.
