Ignorant swine. The f*cking picture didn't originate from YTMND. I'm sure smoothmedia, although he makes good slideshows, DID NOT take that picture himself. It's a famous picture. Also telling others how to vote = failure. Good job at failing hard

Actually, Smoothmedia'a site was nothing original. Go to any Planetarium and Internet site about the Hubble space telescope and you'll see the same thing.

That picture is famous. We looked at this in a college class. It wasn't plagiarism. It's been presented like that by NASA themselves.

Opus has long commented on these types of things. Both the YTMND and the cartoon took the content from NASA. It isn't like the "A Tiny Glimpse" site was 100% original content made by the user.

I'm pretty sure this concept is as old as the magnifying glass. For a nice animated example, watch "Powers of Ten" - it's probably on the youtubes. Answer: it's been done enough that you can't call it stealing.

youre right. this idea was completely original and had never been thought of before. at all. ever. in the history of man.
2007-08-06 21:26:51

It's probably a coincidence. That image is VERY common around the net. Heck, the artist could've seen that and said "Hey, more people should know about this, eh?"
-2
2007-08-06 21:35:43

pretty much a coincidence
2007-08-06 21:38:11

Wait, I thought the artist who did that retired in the 1980s

2007-08-06 22:05:37

No. He just renamed his strip numerous times. Now it runs weekly.
2007-08-06 21:39:34

i read that comic in the paper, and i do think its a coincidence, since Breathed isn't the type of guy to rip other peoples, work, after having a long series and going into doing Sunday only strips, i think he just delved into something that other people have also found.
2007-08-06 21:56:24

Opus is not ripping off YTMND. Opus is dealing with the same subject matter. Also, Opus is awesome.
2007-08-06 21:57:33

This is easily the stupidest question I've seen. Here's a secret. The world does not revolve around this site. Both the YTMND and Opus used a picture that is PUBLIC DOMAIN. I severely doubt that Berke Brethead has even HEARD of YTMND let alone give a f*ck about a site that only the people around here know about. Quit trying to stir up controversy where there is none. YTMND has never invented anything original.
+5
2007-08-06 22:22:00

coincidence
2007-08-06 22:42:50

Yeah, because YTMND claims all rights to nasa photos and the solid facts of space and time. Shut up.
+1
2007-08-06 22:43:04

Coming from The Washington Post Group, you bet your *ss this was a stolen idea. Original credit goes to NASA, but that's our tax money at work so whatever lol.
2007-08-06 22:43:27

What depresses me is that as soon as I saw this in the paper, I had a feeling someone would accuse Breathed of plagiarism. It's just a fascinating tidbit of news, not something that YTMND came up with first, and certainly not something they discovered.
2007-08-06 22:52:47

Disagree. Smoothmedia got all his info/pics and some text from other sources. You could call that plagiarism. People were seeing this info in science class way before the YTMND. If anything, Opus did more (art)work and this was a nod to YTMND. Didn't The Washington Post praise us last year?
+1
2007-08-06 23:05:29

agreed. smoothmedia owns the hubble telescope and also he created each one of those galaxies. so he has exclusive rights to them.

YTMND IS NOT THE CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE!!!!1
2007-08-06 23:40:16

There is no similarity. Ooooh, a F*CKING COMIC STRIP ripped off YTMND, because we had a presentation about space first, and then Berkley Breathed made a comic that showed space with all the stars and planets. I WILL downvote this because i disagree and because i dont want anybody else to see this sh*t. Im a hero.

No, and "Chase" is a very catchy tune.
2007-08-07 00:32:02

Well, NASA did point the Hubble for a week in an area of space that looked like nothing was there, and the pic in the newspaper was posted by NASA, which was then used for the "Tiny Glimpse" YTMND and the Opus cartoon. Nobody is ripping off anything.
2007-08-07 00:32:04

2007-08-07 00:55:14

It wasn't smoothmedia's pic, nor was the presentation of "A Tiny Glimpse" anything new. He just simply brought it to YTMND, but this is no rip-off.
2007-08-07 00:57:02

In response to the "I downvoted 'cause I was asked not to downvote." replies... Wow! You guys are such rebels! Stick it to the man! Don't listen to his reasoning or consider the logic behind his words, just downvote him because he gave reasoning for why you should use your vote wisely! Fight on brothers!
-5

2007-08-07 07:06:01

To call your words "reasoning" is a bit absurd. Come on now. Smoothmedia didn't take the pictures and zoom in and discover galaxies, he wasn't the first to create a sequential site, and he wasn't the first (if he did it at all) to blow up a section of the images in frame. You said, "Leave your opinion." That's all you said. That's not reasoning. That you posed the question at all is even more absurd. Smoothmedia is certainly guilty of plagiarism, but the Opus guy did something new with the idea.
+2

2007-08-07 08:24:36

Yes we should all listen to the man telling us to upvote his site, the reasoning being so more people can see it. How about all the other ytmnds that want to get seen? You're a waste of a features user.

Written mostly in the third person, Wright gets inside the head of "brute Negro" Bigger, revealing his feelings, thoughts and point of view as he commits crimes, is confronted with racism, violence and debasement—the name "Bigger" both is a play of the word "N*gg*r", and a nod to the bigger social forces behind his actions. While not apologizing for Bigger's crimes, Wright is sympathetic to the systemic inevitability behind them. The story is a powerful statement about the inevitable fate of African-Americans as a result of racial inequality and social injustice. As Bigger's lawyer points out, there is no escape from this destiny for his client or any other black American, since they are the necessary product of the society that raised them. "No American Negro exists," Wright once wrote "who does not have his private Bigger Thomas living in his skull."

-1

I'm not gonna vote or anything, but still... don't you think YTMND has ripped off of a couple of things in and of itself? If you plan on trying to fight against this, you will just have more people coming after YTMND. It's a simple theory. If the cat bites the dog, the dog is gonna rip the f*ck out of the cat. Same theory is to a mouse and a cat. Don't write a check your *ss can't cash. F*ck Bill Gates BTW!
