What have you done?! As much as I like it (the music's well chosen btw), you've unleashed a monster possibly even greater than that humorist prank call crap that was #1 top viewed for months. Hell, this is even in top sponsored after a few hours.

I read that there is an in game character that sends you messages and presents named Mom and after a long time a lot of presents and generic messages would accumulate and that this is a big joke that people who were addicted to the joke would be able to get. The real mom didn't sent any gifts, this is just a farce, and a pretty funny one at that, made even funnier by the fact that all these people buy into it as well as the creator, but it's still stolen. Very funny how gullible people are, though.

Why not just referrer ban digg.com? Unless you want digg to ban ytmnd links in future, which makes sense I guess.

I didn't Digg this. All I wanted was a high rating, and now because of your editing, I probably won't even get to keep that. You didn't do this to Telemarketer, and this is something actually worthwhile, that touched the hearts of a lot of people and started to give YTMND a reputation for being more than a den of heartless, mindless idiocy. I wouldn't have minded if you went and just established a referrer ban from Digg, but you've gone and defaced my site. Yes, it's not original, but I cited that.
-11

2007-11-19 11:19:56

Very few things that ever gained massive popularity on YTMND are original. Blueballmachine was stolen from Something Awful. Batman was some clip from the TV show mashed up with a Spanish song. Your original YTMND was a picture of Sean Connery and an out of context movie soundbite, for Christ's sake! Please, for the love of GOD, find a way to block Digg without defacing my YTMND for everyone else.

2007-11-19 11:21:58

It comes down to the fact that every YTMND that drives a massive amount of traffic is stolen content, I don't care if you didn't create this, but I don't want to see this on the top viewed for the next 6 months and I'm going to send people away from it for a few days until things die down. I don't feel the need to pay to host for tens of thousands of people to view a YTMND that was ripped off from elsewhere. Don't get your panties in a bunch.

Why do people here continue to fail to understand, after all these years, the difference between recontextualizing and stealing. Don't they teach "context" in school anymore? Original ytmnd = recontextualized, juxtaposed irony. Lifted video/slide show/meme from _______ = stolen content. It's just not that hard to understand.

I have to think it probably would've made it to digg eventually anyway. I just wish there was a place I could host this that lots of people could enjoy it without it really being a big deal that it's stolen/costing the site owner a lot of money.

I'll 5 something that the original user didn't make once. Just this once. I can't speak for someone I don't know... and I certainly can't speak for someone who I only find out about after their death. I can only say that this boys mother most likely wasn't able to care for her children the way she wanted too. Through Animal Crossing, I think she finally felt like she was giving her children something they could enjoy. It just goes to show you how tragic life can be. She never got to see them happy from this

2007-11-19 12:45:22

All of your examples for "massively popular" ytmnds are years old. Go check the top rated/top faved sites and you will find that they are all original creations. There is no correlation with quality and the number of hits. Hell just because a site gets a relatively large amount of hits doesn't mean it is necessarily popular...it just happened to be linked to a heavily trafficked site.

Does no one realize that this story isn't even real? I played this game a couple of years ago and always got presents from my 'mom', the in-game mom. If you didn't play the game for 18 months, you'd receive loads when you turned it on again.

"I just wish there was a place I could host this that lots of people could enjoy it without it really being a big deal that it's stolen/costing the site owner a lot of money." You can host it the same place you stole it from, 4chan, or ANY IMAGEDUMP ON THE PLANET. It's a farce that you're treating as a true story. THE MOM DIDN'T SEND ANY PRESENTS. The mom sat on her chair and indulged in a game for purely selfish reasons. It's not a touching story, it's fake and it's depressing if taken as real.

"All I wanted was a high rating" - There are no points for first place. Going around the internet and stealing other people's work in order to get high ratings on ytmnd is not a noble practice, nor does it make you "deserving", if that term even relates, of a high rating. Just because other people are unoriginal does not mean that your unoriginality is a good thing. They also gained nothing and are unoriginal thieves that tried to turn this place into a sh*tty, uncreative image dump.

"Besides, I like that I touched SOME people, even if most of YTMND hates me." ...I don't want to be touched by you. I don't want to be touched by the guy who originally made this. And I definitely don't come to ytmnd to get touched. Go touch some youtubers with this sh*t.

"All I wanted was a high rating" - "I just wish there was a place I could host this that lots of people could enjoy it without it really being a big deal that it's stolen/costing the site owner a lot of money." YTMND is not a popularity contest. It's supposed to be a creative outlet. Just because max has loose standards of enforcing that principle doesn't mean that what he did was wrong or undeserved. You're attempting to profit off the stolen work of others, but there's no profit to be had.

Make your own sh*t, don't be a votewhore. Nobody hates you, they just hate that you're an unoriginal votewhore who is the of the diametrical opposite of the intention of this site and the part that keeps it alive. The biggest thing you have to realize is that this image that you stole is a farce. The mother is a literary device intended to mock the narrator (who is not the writer), who is falsely attributing the actions of the in game mother for those of his real mother and thus glorifying her selfishness.
+8

2007-11-19 17:16:56

The joke: Even if the mother did send presents to her kids, it's still not touching as people who are completely out of touch with reality would say, but as she didn't send the presents the entire point of the story is to show how stupid the narrator is for falsely assuming his mother cared about him. Is that the uplifting story you were going for? I doubt it. It's pretty funny, though, but very dark. It's just too bad that you didn't bother to understand the material you stole.

Your statements are pretty telling as to how much you think of yourself. You're not "in the middle of a war", and if you were, you put it there yourself by stealing something written by those 10% and marketed for the 90% in order to mock their initial sentimental reaction to it. In a vacuum, it's funny, but in that sense it's just a stupid inside joke. Regardless, your site isn't very important, it isn't yours, and nothing will change as a result of this site. That's one hell of a WAR.

I also don't think that just because you're an *ssh*le means that you can qualify yourself as an *ssh*le intellectual. I also think those categorizations are stupid stereotypes which are only useful for self aggrandizing propaganda, which doesn't surprise me. "All of you stupid emo kids or smart *ssh*les are ruining the world I'm stuck in the middle of you." Why don't you change your name to RyJesus and just be honest with your self.

I just don't like being treated like I created this site with the sole intention of causing trouble. I wanted a high rating. Are we NOT supposed to want a high rating? Are we supposed to come to YTMND, and make something original and creative, and say "I don't care if this gets 50 1s, as long as I made something original and creative I'm happy!" Yes, of course being noticed is nice, but when I get a high rating it means people ENJOYED what I made. I don't care whether it's original or not.

2007-11-19 17:34:29

Of course, if I can make something creative and original AND score a high rating, that's great! But if I see something that I think people will like, I'll make a YTMND out of it. People LIKED this YTMND. Lots of people did. I read the comments about it on digg, and I felt good that I was able to warm the hearts of a lot of people. I don't give a sh*t who it pisses off.

Also sentimental is not the same as emo. Sentimentality is part of romanticism which is the dominant modern cultural influence, and sentimentality is frivolous and superficial, as the reactions to this site clearly show. Also, if you asked a romantic whether a parent who spent all their time on a video games was a good parent, they'd probably feel the opposite of the way the feel now about this site, but I guess that spin reveals hypocrisy, doesn't it?

Are we supposed to come to YTMND, and make something original and creative, and say "I don't care if this gets 50 1s, as long as I made something original and creative I'm happy!"" That's not a bad place to start. Some people also say, "I put this onto ytmnd for other people to enjoy." However, saying "I want other people to enjoy this" when really you mean "I want a high rating" is incredibly dishonest. Now, who would say that?

""I had NO idea it would take off like it did, and frankly, I don't care." "All I wanted was a high rating."- As in, I care more about the rating of a site than how many views it gets. 3.00 rating with 500,000 views means a lot of people saw it and HATED it, and that's no good. 4.70 rating with 5,000 views means that not many people saw it, but those that saw it enjoyed it. And that's what I like to see. And yes, "made" was a bad choice of words. "Posted" would've been better.

Well let's see. If I post something and it gets a low rating, that means that A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO SAW IT DIDN'T ENJOY IT! Meaning that I wasted a minute of somebody else's life. But a high rating means that I made someone laugh, or cry, or whatever.
