Description: Jim Henson is my hero. He was a great man and should forever be remembered. There probably isn't a single person on here who didn't grow up watching and loving his work. I did and still do. RIP Jim. You are missed.

I'm going to be very serious for a moment. I have a friend who's an artist and I help him out and go to art shows and things. We meet alot of art buyers and studio owners and artists. People sometimes ask, who's your favorite artist, and I answer to them, Jim Henson, and it usually gets me baffled looks every time. Still, I continue to do this and will most likely till the day I die.

Yeah the world would definitely be a different place without JH. For one, I would simply be Vomiting. It's weird to imagine what would be in the slots of history filled by his creations, if he had never been around. This almost gets me to thinking of YTMND's where JH is hunted by terminators trying to erase Muppetdom, but that could be due to the fact I need sleep.

The point of my comment is that people are always saying that they "want to make a difference," as if it makes them some sort of forward-thinking saints. It's entirely possible to "make a difference" and make things appreciably worse. I'm not saying Henson did that, I was just reacting to him uttering such a banal, say-nothing platitude.

Instead, you've become a worthless troll on some obscure website. GJ

You have to look at the flipside. Maybe not everyone is a cynical, arrogant blowhard who wants to make sure everyone sees the bad in everything. Maybe he wanted to make the world a better place, and because he kept that as his focus, he DID make the world a better place. Maybe you should try doing the same instead of trying to tear things down. You might be less bitter.

"Instead, you've become a worthless troll on some obscure website." Doesn't make me wrong. ;o)

I'm about as optimistic as a person can be while still being reasonably grounded in reality. Let's face it: Jim Henson didn't "make the world a better place," he made a series of puppet shows that entertained a fairly large number of people. There's nothing wrong with that, and there's nothing wrong with people liking his shows, but none of that has improved the world in any significant way. Acknowledging that isn't "being bitter," it's simply realistic.

A person makes the world a better place by enriching the lives of those in his sphere of influence. By making his puppet show, Henson expanded his sphere of influence greatly, and many of us were enriched by it. He focused on education and got a lot of kids interested in learning. He didn't have a mean-spirited bone in his body. Anyone who brings that to the table is indeed making the world a better place -- not for every person in the world simultaneously, but for who he comes in contact with.
+6

2008-01-09 15:02:37

Yeah, I can buy the "George Bailey Effect" to a degree, but what degree of "enriching" makes a significant difference? I mean, a lot of people like Pepsi; would you say their lives are enriched by it? Getting kids "interested in learning" is not the same thing as educating them. Harry Potter purportedly "got kids interested in reading," but how much of that increase in reading went beyond the reading of Harry Potter?

What degree of difference do you consider significant? You keep trying to define Jim Henson's contribution to entertainment and education as some vapid, meaningless diversion for people less intelligent than you. "Jim Henson framed education in a palatable format for children, and thus made learning easier and more fun for them" is not a parallel statement with "I like Pepsi", no matter how hard you try to make it so.
+1

2008-01-09 16:09:37

Anyway, to get back to your original point, you accuse the people who want to "make a difference" as universally narcissistic, amoral attention junkies. Your premise seems to be that anyone who receives attention must have been looking for it, and didn't care how they got it. To follow that line of thinking, if someone receives a huge amount of attention, it doesn't matter if it's for something good or evil -- it reflects on the amount of attention the recipient wanted and vied for. That's just...dumb?

""Sacred cows make the best hamburger." - Twain" Twain also put EFFORT into his sarcasm and jibes.
-1

2008-01-09 19:43:05

"...you accuse the people who want to "make a difference" as universally narcissistic, amoral attention junkies." Patently false. Rather, I'm saying that many people say that they "want to make a difference" without ever saying what it is they intend to do to achieve that goal. That IMNTHO comes off as a cheap attempt to appear more moral and thoughtful. I'm not even saying that was Henson's intent, but rather that it's not as impressive a thing to say as people seem to think it is.
-3

2008-01-09 19:57:42

"You keep trying to define... people less intelligent than you." Inferiority complex much? I don't believe I've denigrated anyone's intelligence. I never said I never enjoyed Mr. Henson's programs, either. I am saying that whatever contribution to "making education more palatable" his programs may have made is unquantifiable and not unique. Kids learned before Muppets, and it's arguable they learned equally well if not better then. Still, that reflects more on the state of Education than on JH's shows.
-3

2008-01-09 20:08:01

wow, im still stuck on the part that "Getting kids "interested in learning" is not the same thing as educating them" part... good luck educating someone who does not want to learn. Inspiring kids to want to learn is for their developmental benefit, and you scoff at it... someone had some mommy-daddy issues when growing up. any 1 man who can inspire millions of kids to take the first steps in learning is a genius. wheres your millions?

2008-01-09 20:13:27

"Your premise seems...didn't care how they got it." You're reading an awful lot into what I wrote. It seems to me that you have quite a lot of emotion invested in Jim Henson, which strikes me as not a little unhealthy: you (likely) never knew him personally, but rather only from his works and interviews. Sure, he seemed a nice guy with decent goals, and you're not wrong to admire him, but I'm not attacking you by not admiring him as much as you. Keep that in mind, you might be less bitter. ;o)
-3

2008-01-09 20:18:35

"Twain also put EFFORT into his sarcasm and jibes." Which would surely be a damning indictment if I was comparing myself to him, rather than merely quoting him. But while we're on that subject, keep in mind that as you point your finger at me the other three are curling back to point at you. Just saying, Mr. Pot. :oD
-3

2008-01-09 20:28:17

"good luck educating someone who does not want to learn." Teachers do it all the time. Long after the "learning can be fun!" antics of Muppets and other denizens of children's educational programming have faded from memory, teachers get students to learn ancient history, trigonometry, Jacobean English poetry, foreign languages, etc. I give teachers and (yes!) parents (involved parents, anyway) more credit for educating than I do any TV show.
-3

2008-01-09 20:36:45

"any 1 man who can inspire millions of kids to take the first steps in learning is a genius." Any child who needs a TV show to inspire him to take the first steps in learning has criminally negligent parents. Don't you realize how silly you sound asserting that education without Jim Henson is impossible? He contributed to some shows that feature lessons in counting and the alphabet. Don't get me wrong, that's nice, but hardly essential.
-2

2008-01-09 20:38:59

One last one; I can't pass this up, though I probably should: "someone had some mommy-daddy issues when growing up." Don't be so hard on yourself, you'll overcome it eventually. :o)

+2

2008-01-10 08:19:20

My "cynical jabs" aren't directed toward Jim Henson. They're directed toward a site that in my estimation seems calculated to garner a lot of 5's and glowing comments due to good feelings for a man who, while unquestionably a fine human being, has been dead for nearly 18 years. I'd be more understanding if his death was recent or if he wasn't already well-known and appreciated, but as it stands this site seems designed to tickle people's nostalgia centers so that they vote 5. Forgive me if I'm wrong, VIsra.

2008-01-10 09:27:48

Hey, pharaohmobius, I can understand your logic behind that. But in all honesty I didn't make this site in order to get a high rating. In fact when I was making it I was certain it wasn't gonna get higher than a 3. I put this together because Jim Henson is my idol and I don't think he gets the respect he deserves. Jim Henson was a great person and did a lot to bring happiness to people. I wanted to remind people of that. I miss him and the time when the Henson name meant high quality family entertainment

hahaha -- sorry, no Muppet fetish here. I'm just trying to find out why you take such pleasure in being caustic and cynical. It could have been anyone up in the "makingtheworldabetterplace" chair. The world is better because people determine to leave it in a better state than they found it. Jim Henson was one such guy. Whether or not he reached your standards of achievement in this is up for debate, but I guess if you have something better on your resume, now's the time to bring it up.
+1

2008-01-10 11:31:16

Well, I did single-handedly prevent the Eugenics Wars back in the 90s, that should count for something. :oD Seriously though, your argument of "oh yeah, what have YOU done" is sophistry, since I never claimed to make the world a better place. We've established that you and I have differing standards of what "making the world a better place" is, so really there's nothing more to argue about. I don't think your opinion makes you a bad person, and I have nothing against you.
-1

2008-01-10 11:47:17

As for why I take "such pleasure in being caustic and cynical," chalk that up to a difference of opinion on what those words, too. I enjoy my life, and apparently in your opinion I do so cynically. YMMV, I guess. :o) If that answer doesn't satisfy you, I give you these lyrics: "how would I know the living if I didn't know the dying / how could I taste the honey if there was no pain in trying ... I'm sicker than the rest / and I love the bitterness" :oD

jim henson made a lot of people laugh and he made an effort to promote the rather out of fashion idea of being nice to one another. so he did his bit for the world, which is more than can be said for the majority of people who've ever lived. if you're gonna mock him, he's got more viable weak-points. that beard for example...
+1

2008-01-11 07:15:00

"Your first comment did seem directed towards Jim Henson." It was, admittedly, a pretty oblique comment. I'm sure my use of the "sacred cows" quote didn't do much to make anyone think otherwise, either. I had meant that more as a commentary on how rapidly and heatedly people responded to my initial comment; that is, people treating this ytmnd as if it were sacrosanct (a "sacred cow"), but I can see how someone could take it as aimed at Henson himself. Well, that's the internet for you.
