An octopus's camouflage is aided by certain specialized skin cells which can change the apparent color, opacity, and reflectiveness of the epidermis. Chromatophores contain yellow, orange, red, brown, or black pigments; most species have three of these colors, while some have two or four. Other color-changing cells are reflective iridophores, and leucophores (white)

Three defensive mechanisms are typical of octopuses: ink sacs, camouflage, and autotomising limbs. Search for some stuff on youtube if you still don't believe!

2008-03-03 16:53:38

I suspect that this is fake, not because of the color change, but if you look carefully, the octopus goes from having smooth skin to having little branches like the plant (in reverse). They cant do that, they can only change color, not texture.

It's not fake, for the last time. It's actually a piece of footage taken a couple of years ago that's become VERY famous in nature circles. It was featured on the Discovery:Science channel. Jesus, people.

www.australiancephalopods.com/occy_defense.html. From the article: "They produce elaborate colour patterns and highly complex skin textures capable of matching a wide range of backgrounds from sand and reef rubble, through to spiked corals and seaweeds. Their skin changes almost instantaneously as they move over different substrates on the sea floor." Still, -2 for not being a ytmnd.

That's insanity. A pity it was too dumb to realize it wasn't noticed there and broke cover when approached by the camera.
