Have you ever been in battle? With real guns and bombs and people dying around you? Be honest (at least with yourself). I'm curious, because I come from a very conservative, Christian, military family and something I've noticed navigating that world throughout my life is the difference between the kind of knee-jerk right-wing catch phrase babble that comes from people who would never have to either kill or be killed...

...and the conservativism of my grandfather, a solider through and through from the day he graduated West Point in 1943 to the day he retired as Brig. General. He was very anti-liberal, for obvious reasons. But he wasn't a fanatic because he knew what it meant to kill, had seen it with his own eyes in three different wars, had pulled the trigger and written the battle plans and saw very clearly what war means.

He and I didn't agree on many things when it came to politics, religion, and much about our culture, but we did both agree that the worst kind of person is the civilian war hawk who would send people to war, to kill and to die, for their own fears, prejudices, and insecurities long before doing the hard work of learning, meeting, understanding, and negotiating. If you seriously think that simply because Obama might become president that the US will be overrun by Muslims, I am wasting my time here...

...and all the evidence in the world won't change your mind. Take a look at how much of the US economy depends upon weapons and military production. Think of the number of major corporations in the US that draw most of their business from defense spending, military R&D, etc. The US is not going to all of a sudden have an ineffective military under a Democrat. It may not have a Star Wars defense system. It may not be so trigger happy as we have been under Bush. But there are factors...
