I made a site like this once. I was going to change Ytmnd but Max offered me a 3 month paid vacation and a company car. All I had to do was sign something saying I won't continue making proposal sites. Henry and I went to Europe. Kids, sometimes it pays to be gay.

lol @ momthinksimcool calling other people NARVs. momthinksimcool is easily one of the worst YTMNDers I know.

I had to go to Urbandicionary.com to look up "NARV" just to make sure I wasn't one. Happy to report that I'm not.

What's interesting is that this guy has almost precisely the same amount of 1-4 star votes, even though they're all well over a thousand each. As much as I like that voting behavior, I have to wonder if you're giving this a one star vote just because you're like Monk and need your statistics neat and tidy as opposed to actually having a valid opinion on the site.
+2

2008-08-08 14:30:59

that's a valid concern, I know it would be possible to just simply vote an exactly equal amount of each number without even thinking about it, but my vote spread comes from the opposite affect of actually thinking about how much i like sites relative to others. a lot of people whenever they see something positive they hit 5 and if they feel negative they hit 1 and dont even bother with the 3's if they're indifferent, or they just vote 5 on popular sites so people will like them and rate their sites higher
-5

2008-08-08 14:33:18

the one thing i can say to refute your claim is i would have to be pretty insane to make hundreds and hundreds of votes just to be "neat". that wouldnt be any fun. it' s much more fun to actually put thought into your votes as opposed to just pushing a button repeatedly. i think most of the people on this site learned to vote playing nintendo

1. downvoters are the only thing that keep ytmnd from total destruction, be more worried about the upvoters 2. only power hungry f*ggot nerds would be willing to moderate on this site and that would be gay 3. you can make the slots however you want, no need to change defaults 4. get it out of your head that ytmnd will be on tv 5. stop thinking that your stupid ideas could fix a ruined site....
-3

2008-08-08 21:33:07

you have to know that the upvoters are ruining everything. they piss off good users more that downvoters ever did, and make them leave. these days, the good ratings have less to do with the quality of the site, and more to do with the people you know. it isnt good when EVERY week 3 or 4 sites are voted higher than the hall of fame sites ever were. the classics' good ratings are just getting spit on when any douche bag can head paste a koen site and get upvoted to the moon.

people who whine about downvoters care about themselves and their sites. people who whine about upvoters care about the integrity and greatness of the site. stop being selfish and shortsided, and realized fourest was the death of ytmnd.

I love this site and I'm sorry if I left out upvoters as one of the problems. I agree, having to have a site be 4.4 to be in U+C is just as big of a problem as downvoters were. I still thinks this place can recover though. Honestly I can't imagine being in any online forum other than this one, regardless of all the f*gs here there are too many people that make this site great (or at least there were).

While this is a good way to get discussion going, most, if not all of this stuff has been brought up previously. What it comes down to is YTMND only has one real coder, sysadmin, administrator, person to deal with ads, legal complaints, etc. Plenty of the items on your list are reasonable, a lot are even in the TODO, it's just a matter of when they will get done.
+3

2008-08-11 20:38:02

That being said, I don't think we need more exposure until the site is capable of purging "undesirables" and I don't think downvoters/upvoters need to be dealt with unless they are gaming the system by having multiple accounts, as there aren't any rules against it and I think ultimately they even themselves out. If you average every vote on the site it is ~ 2.7, so it seems like despite all of the "dishonest" voting, things still seem to average out.
+1

2008-08-11 21:02:04

What's the worry about undesirables? MySpace and 4Chan are comprised mostly OF undesirables, yet they have no trouble with fame.

that might be true of OSX but I have experienced issues in windows XP firefox 2&3 and on a fedora virtual machine I run at work with firefox. I had to roll back quicktime on XP FF2 just to get it working again. I also wish they would do away with .wav formats all together as theese seem to be to blame for alot of the sound issues on sites and mp3s are not hard to make.

Why do you people always piss on people who only vote 1 and never mention people who only vote 5? To me the biggest problem that will never be addressed is large scale vote hacking by the likes of Fourest and AndySavage. The 'vote drone' accounts they have people vote with usually have nothing but 5s for them and their friends. So deleting all users with nothing but 5 votes would stop abuse. Deleting the accounts with 1s would do nothing because those people usually downvote everyone - so it doesn't matter
-2

2008-08-08 10:11:45

You make a valid point. Maybe the same sort of system could be implemented for the upvote spammers?
-6

2008-08-08 10:18:22

yea but atleast getting rid of the downvoter accounts would improve all the decent sites and users that were damaged in the past. i doubt that a downvoter will go and re-vote 1 on ALL the sites he/she has ever downvoted already. plus if it was regulaly kept tabs on (dunno if thats possible or wotever just imagining) then the site could continuously keep downvoters at bay..... u never know, people might even stop bothering because they always get deleted eventually.
-1

2008-08-08 10:25:41

And honest to god you see the sites that have been getting 4.7 ratings lately? They are laughably bad. We need more downvoters. When people like Syncan and Sitsu used to actually make good, funny sites even they didn't score higher than 4.5 / 4.6 because the downvoters who downvoted everyone. I can't fathom that you babies are complaining about downvoters today when just the gayest most unfunny sites can get a 4.7 rating. If you YTMNDed 2 years ago I guess you would have killed yourself. There aren't any f*cking downvoters anymore so I don't even know what the hell you're talking about. We need the downvoters back. For the wee balance.
+1

2008-08-08 10:32:19

Example of who should be deleted: http://ytmnd.com/users/SirHexan/votes

2008-08-08 10:50:52

I vote zero. Also, umfuld, you are so very wrong. When someone downvotes a GOOD site, it reduces the rating much quicker than a 5 vote can raise it. To get a 4.5 rating, you can only have 1, 1-star vote for every 5, 5-star votes (or something to that effect, too lazy to actually do itsmath.ytmnd.com) So some blind douchebag downvoter with nothing better to do happens upon your new site that you worked on for 12 days and *bam*, you're off Up and Coming and bye-bye any chance for exposure.

2008-08-08 10:53:14

yeah pretty much, and if he has even one or two alts and a grudge against you you're toast.

2008-08-08 10:59:13

Why don't we make a politcallycorrectmnd ...you can vote from 3 stars to 3 stars, everyone get's a Chuck Norris thumbs up sticker and level up music?

2008-08-08 11:11:28

Wrong. If Punisher 1s every stie - repeat - EVERY SITE - his vote is meaningless. I'm sorry you can't grasp this - but I could waste my entire life trying to explain stuff to f*cking retards, I'd rather not though. If someone - like fourest - has 150 accounts at his disposal and just 5s certain sites; That's 1000 times worse. Moron
-2

2008-08-08 11:15:13

How? At least we're getting new content, granted some of it may be crap but isn't it better than looking at the same stuff for 4 days in a row.
-1

2008-08-08 11:15:57

Anig - I agree one person with a grudge and who abuses alts can kill anyone's site who's not featured and that sucks. But that doesn't have anything to do with what you said in your site. You said people who almost only vote 1 - someone with a grudge against you might not fall into that catagory so it doesn't really apply.
-1

2008-08-08 15:21:25

Umfuld, don't make sh*t up about me because I call you out on your whiny bullsh*t. Last time you said I votehacked, I challenged you to provide at least ONE alt that I've used to upvote ANY of my own sites. You have nothing. You really think I'm pulling something? Ask the mods. Please, be my guest. I'd love to see your face when you find out your cries of alt abuse are all in vain.

Wait the stars are used for voting? I thought they were just for decoration.
+5

2008-08-08 16:49:57

Technically, fives are weighted much less than ones, so that a decent enough reason to focus on removing downvoters. But I don't think the figures should be 50% of votes, it should be more like 70%.
+2

2008-08-08 18:15:52

I usually only vote 5, but I do it to a small percentage of total sites. It should be number of 5 votes out of total votes possible. I either like a site (5), hate it (1), or don't care (don't vote).
-2

2008-08-08 21:52:07

I think people should stop trying to control the voting habits of others. If someone only wants to vote 5 on what they like and 1 on what they don't like, that's their business. Learn to make a site he won't 1 if you care so much. Sh*tty voting habits is not the same as abuse.

2008-08-10 17:14:02

It's got nothing to do with alts andy. but facts speak for themselves. You are a vote hack: http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/7181/00ju4.png 1000 fewer views = 100 more votes ??? Add it up YTMND. It's math

2008-08-10 22:22:38

Ok, lets do a little math. Maybe it's been a few decades since you took a math class, but surely you still know how ratios work. Votes/view would be the important one here. Go look at the profiles again as they are right now, dust off your TI-83 and do some division. The vote-per-view ratio is nearly the exact same number for these two sites. You can even go check out this week's top viewed and find one that have a MUCH higher vote-per-view. That means they must ALL be votehacking right? What a joke.

2008-08-11 10:14:38

After 1 day of voting you had 100 more votes than a site that had 1200 more views. That's a vote hack buddy. Whether it's you doing it or if you're just F.O.F. (Friend of Fourest) I don't know. But you'll never be able to explain that away. Never. Your scores are meaningless because there is clearly cheating involved. You're the Barry Bonds of YTMND
-1

2008-08-11 12:39:20

Oh, silly umfuld. You think I'd risk all my sites and a spot on the top rated users page for that? I've told you once and I'll tell you again: go complain to the mods if you really think i'm dishonest. Really. Do it. Contact the head of the bureau. Launch a full investigation. But you don't want to, do you, because you know you'll be wrong. So you're gonna sit here and flood comment pages with your baseless accusations. Too bad everyone here knows you're full of sh*t.
+2

2008-08-11 18:30:09

Usually the only sites I vote on are the ones that I really like so I believe that I would only have 5 votes. That would put good folk like me at risk.

2008-08-14 04:34:37

by the way, idiot, getting 100 more votes than the top viewed site for a day is not baseless. Since only a couple of sites a day get 100 votes total lately, getting 100 MORE votes than the TOP VIEWED site - it's quite basefull. You cheat. It's a proven fact. Your scores, like fourest's, are meaningless.

totally agree. I reeely hope max sees this or someone and does something about it...... though knowing ytmnd, nothing will happen. is it so hard to get som more moderators to take care of the site? It's not that I hate this place... its just life. Sorry to break it to some of those that jerkoff to this site, but some people just foudn other things to do, lived there life, and moved on. A list site with a serious intention, I honestly was expecting #1. - NEDM. Thank you sir for proving my intuition wrong. In regards to the content, I say lets overload the core, run our asses off, and then start rebuilding again from the ashes. Every website has those type of users and there is really no way to avoid them. Yeah, it is ridiculous that some users only vote 1 on everything, I agree with that, but overall there is no rule that says that you cannot one star everything, so there is nothing anyone can do about those type of users.

2008-08-08 13:02:32

I was surprised to find that the song was really well synced at the end; the song restarted at the exact same time as the rest of the YTMND. It wasn't neccessary (it's justbackground music, right?), but I guess you wanted to set a good example.
2008-08-08 11:44:19

Get rid of the featured user section all together, all it does is make people pissed off. It was created to counter the huge influx of NARVs way back when, it's not really needed now. Get rid of comment votes, they're just useless. Bring back and improve the worthwhile section, there are so many awesome sites that were topped viewed for about a day and then fell off the face of the earth.

It is wrong to try to control and moderate how people vote. Alts need to be controlled not some stupid Hulk-Hogan gimmick account who attacks everyone once in a while. Even finding alts can be a problem because sometimes they are just friends, not alts. Frankly I find people who only vote 5s and 1s to be the bigger idiots.

Featured users need to be dumped and forgotten about. It's a good concept, but poorly executed. There are too many people on there that have no business being there. People with one or two good sites (meaning rated higher than 4.0) out of 20 should not be featured. Plus it brings too much attention to the user instead of the site.
+7

2008-08-09 00:28:01

featured status should be more of a revolving door, with people who, during any set standard amount of time (ie monthly) EARN featured status. if their sites continue to be successful they never lose status. if they suck, they 're dropped. i'm no smart guy, so i have no idea how hard something like that would be to pull off, so i'll assume that it's too much work.

Mods are the other tricky issue. You can't just let anyone be a mod. I know Max wants people he can trust and who will help with the site. Lets say the Britzman became a mod last year. Remember when he went berserk, created an alt and started revenge downvoting everyone who didn't like his sites? Imagine if he had mod abilities...

I have to say I agree with alot of stuff on there, and I think there are many new YTMNDs that I really like. I'll find a site that's good everynow and they can be funny, but none of them have fads or anything. Ytmnd is missing fads now. NSMB, Batman uleule, Picard. nothing like that anymore. The only fad I can think of ytmnd last had was Sparta. I don't like the idea of deleting users who give over 50% voting 5, I like the sites I vote on and if I don't like one I just leave.

I agree with 3, 5, and 10, completely disagree with 9. I think featured users should just be eliminated. Also, if anything, maybe replace it with a customized "favorite users" where you could pick who is on the list. And yeah, I don't think we really want exposure do to sites like "JEWS DID 9/11" or a raid of a stupid site like habbo.

A bucket of beers on stage. It was in their rider. I saw them at the Empty Bottle for a NYE show years ago (the Strokes opened and no one knew who they were, if that tells ya anything) and they did Baba O'Riley as an encore, pretending they were actually The Who. It was pretty funny.

2008-08-10 04:50:24

I've got a boot of that song but not the whole show. Last time I saw them was on the EC farewell tour in Dallas. They had one of those freestanding coolers you find in a convenience store, usually filled with 20 oz. bottles of coke or something, filled with miller lite. How they still played an hour long encore after drinking that much is impressive.

I would say instead of just getting more automaters, have a system that would ban you if you make all 1 star votes over so many votes, ban accounts that are coming from an IP that has several other accounts on it. Kills downvoting and alt spamming. Better yet, delete sites that have a rating lower than 3 and/or views under 3,000 within a month. Don't need YTMND spammed with crappy sites ("artistic" bullsh*t aside).

2008-08-08 23:54:05

Also, you could keep a site around if it has so much sponsorship. People want to give YTMND sh*t sites, they can pay for the bandwidth.
