I had the most fun using the CD cassette tape combos to record the music from the original tomb raider onto a cassette. I loved how when you put the old playstation games into a CD player it would just play all the music contained in the game.

We in Russia knew the secret from the beginning. We also made COPIES from other cassettes (wow, you must've never guessed it was possible) and that was real pirating. We even managed to make copies without dual cassette players, with 2(!) single cassette players and an earphone.

Back when you were making mixed tapes off the radio, I had a cassette-only "record" label and we did mail-order through BBSs on this new thing called "the internet." Mike Landucci, where are you now?

When I was 13 I signed up for the Columbia House Record deal where you got 10 albums for one penny. That's right, RECORD albums. I got Kiss-Rock Army, ZZ Top-Fandango, ELO-A New World Record....aw f*ck, you kids don't care. Besides, it's time for me to rinse my dentures...............

I had every Doors album, most of them from Columbia House. Somewhere in the 90s though, when my friend ran a record store in Venice Beach, I sold them all so I could buy a bunch of Shrimper cassettes and 7" comps. I can't decide which era I'm more ashamed of.

Actually hank, as much as I want to agree with you, the RIAA has for decades argued that they disagree with the copying for "personal use" clause. I've heard their lawyers state, in front of hundreds of people on more than one occasion, that traditional copyright laws provide for no such legal duplication or usage. They're total tools and have been for over half a century.

Man, this brought back some good memories of when I used to do this. I used to do most of the tricks mentioned so far in these comments too. I remember not wanting to switch over to cd's for the longest time because they sounded a little TOO good, like it felt lifeless in a way. The fun of capturing songs live on the radio as they played was something that couldn't be replaced either.

2008-08-29 01:27:15

I used to record movie soundtracks by fast-forwarding my VHS tapes to the end credits. Then I would stick my radio right next to my tv speakers & hit record. The sound quality was sh*t but I didn't care. The thing that makes this really pitiful is that my VHS collection was made up of copied rentals from Major Video . My mom was too cheap to buy me real copies (She only got me things I didn't care about like food & clothes). I've still got a tape with the Ghostbusters, Goonies, & Gremlins themes.

Here's an equally awesome secret: If you can get on top of the brick wall that lines the top of World 1-2 in Super Mario Bros., run along it to the end of the level and you can warp to another world! SSSH! It's a secret to everyone!

2008-08-29 21:05:58

If you can break a hole in the wall from underneath, then align the middle of your body with that wall and keep moving right, it takes you to a secret, apparently forever, under water world.

If you go back and read up on music industry history, there was almost as much hysteria and even litigation back then over cassettes (and CD burners; and with the movie industry it was VCRs) as there is today over digital formats. Not exactly a forward looking group of people, them.
