good site, I just don't feel like he would be that diplomatic about handing out the money. It would be more accurate if he took $100 from everybody and handed it to his friends at the end of the road.

When the Federal Reserve issues bailouts and buys companies with billions of dollars that don't actually exist, I consider that creating money willy nilly. They haven't literally printed new money but they have inflated the money supply through credit. Also, economic growth as you are defining it is not a good thing, because it's not based on real wealth. And people should not spend money they don't have, that is pure common sense. I guess in a college economics classroom that's worthless, though.

The bailout was not an exercise of the Fed's normal powers, but rather a special act by Congress. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.R._1424 The devil you are looking for here is Secretary Paulson, the designated leader of the "rescue bill" planning and execution, not Bernanke. Also, loans (normal ones, not bailouts) are absolutely necessary for economic growth. I'm not talking about a family recklessly charging too much; I'm talking about the initial money needed for enterprises to start up.

2008-12-02 19:33:36

You're right, the bailout measure is congress' baby, and it's more of a (failed) political move than a policy decision. In reality, the Fed doesn't need Congressional approval to buy assets in the market (or do anything else). On the very day the first bailout bill failed they pumped in $600 Billion worth of credit anyway. Also I agree with you about loans, just not when they're imaginary.

china has been keeping its currancy crappy on purpose to help its manufacturing growth at the expence of that currency. this f*cks with their ability to purchase domestic apparently (that and crappy labor unions), which is why they export or die. the whole trade with china is lopsided. we need to produce more, and they need to buy more is the just of it, but then i'm not an expert, i just like to read and stay educated.

"Also, the goal of the Federal Reserve for the past several decades has been to keep inflation at a healthy nominal level, not to raise it." Yeah, a great job it did.... why the dollar is worth at LEAST 25% of what it was in 1971

To be accurate to what he would have to do to save wall street, you would have to use the scene in The Dark Knight when the Joker burns the money.

reluctant 5 for the batman scene, i don't see why this guy is becoming a ytmnd hero, considering probably only 10% of us actually know who he is and what he does, or actually cares about it.
