Wait, what?! What friggin' history books are you two reading? Hitler never killed a Jew? What kind of moronic logic is that? There are millions of Americans who believe that Bush, Kissinger, Reagan, Nixon and numerous other top leaders should have been/be tried for war crimes. Granted, power imbalance keeps that from happening, but it's not like nobody ever thought to hold someone like Truman (or LeMay, McNamara, Johnson, etc) responsible for the deaths caused by their policies.

Of course the U.S. and Israel have caused millions of deaths. Anyone who says otherwise is f*cking retarded. The fire bombing during WWII of Japan and Germany alone would trump a dedicated African genocide, and in just mere hours. Hell, "the only good indian is a dead indian" was basically a federally driven public policy initiative. So the question isn't whether one country or another caused more deaths. It's a question of how a society rationalizes such deaths.

You misunderstand my point. You can drop in a normal conversation "Hitler murdered Jews" and no one bats an eye. You can say that on TV and no one bats an eye. But people will be like OMG if you say Bush murdered Iraqis, Truman murdered Japs, Churchill murdered Africans, Clinton...etc. In fact whoever said that would immediately get admonished for it if on TV.

I didn't miss your point. You just aren't presenting it very well. People say such things regularly in debates about the responsibility of world leaders, both in America and beyond. If you mean that Katie Couric or Glen Beck don't say it, well, sure but look at the context of that particular (albeit dominant) angle of the media. That does not mean, however, that it hasn't been said, isn't being said regularly. The entire point of Fog of War was to say such things.

Editors/writers at Harper's, the New Yorker, the Guardian, and numerous other outlets with millions of readers say such things regularly. Sure, my grandfather who was a general in Vietnam isn't going to take too kindly to being compared to Hitler but he's complicit. Sure, I can imagine conversations with the "OMG" people as you speculate but if you mean "everyday Americans" well most "everyday Americans" have no idea how many deaths the U.S. was responsible for in South America.

Most "everyday Americans" have no idea how many Iraqi citizens died due to sanctions on Iraq between 1991 and 2003. Most don't have a clue that during WWII we rounded up and "interned" not only American citizens of Japanese descent but also Japanese living all over North and South America. That even the Supreme Court signed off on it.

But whatever, most "everyday Americans" don't know the names of their Representatives, can't explain the difference between a Republic and a Democracy, don't understand the electoral college, can't name ten countries in Africa, can't name ten presidents, couldn't find Afghanistan on a map, can't be bothered to vote, and think that American Idol is a worthy TV show while Arrested Development was not. Of course they don't get the finer points of a "murderer" vs "hero" debate.
