I just came back from a walk, actually. I saw this blind guy crossing Flatbush against the light almost get hit by a speeding van. When I downvote a site I hate and it ends up getting back to 4 afterward I change my vote to 5 to have it shoot way up there in hopes that real voters will kill it then I can change my voat back to 1 and it will really be dead. Dude, I take back my pathetic comment, because that made me think. YTMND is in the gutter at it is, ravaged by terrible fads (like Masterlock) and worse trolls. I've only been here a mere two months, but that's long enough to get a feel for how the community is. I'm proud to be a YTMNDer. But Max need to get his relaxing *ss in gear and clean this site up. I'm simply grateful to them for 5ing my sites. We all want 5s.

I've been here, on this account, for almost 4 years. It's been sh*tty before, it's been better. The problem now is that when, in the past, a user like MasterSitsu caught someone alt upvoting, they were driven from the community. Now, the community is the alt upvoters. I'm sick of it & I'm going to use alts to level the sites of users who do that. I didn't come here to make friends with losers, I didn't come here to get site views I cheated for. I come to see good stuff that sometimes peeks thru the sh*t.

3 years ago I would have been proud. This year, not so much. In fact, that idea makes me throw up in my mouth a little. I tried really hard to care for a while, hoping that would give me motivation and encouragement to help ytmnd but, really, its much better to distance yourself from this community, and not be concerned about ytmnd's broken nature. Find another outlet. You will feel better guaranteed. I didn't want to pussy out but, there is nothing a couple dozen users can do: it's a wasted investment.

It's a real shame that I was driven out and misunderstood by umfuld (not that his opinion affected my transition away from making ytmnd content, but his persistence--along with increased forum-post-like content on UC--made me consider why I was wasting my time). And I maintain that tone is really important. After all, the reason why we are not enemies is because I'm f*cking nice to everyone including you. I could have just been like: "f*ck it" and decide to exchange insults, but I don't see that as conducive for reasons stated above. Once umfuld declared me an enemy, I was doomed to permanent conflict with him. In retrospect, I regret arguing with umfuld instead of attacking the real issues, but it was just the easy way out and it was an outlet for entertainment.

You also lied to him, got caught lying, and when confronted you joined the legions of user who attacked him. i did it too when I thought he was batsh*t crazy but then I stopped arguing for a few weeks and read thoroughly what he was saying. He was saying what everyone who whined in the News pages was saying, only he was naming names and calling people out for it. Yeah, he's mean. So what. So is ruining an entire web community so your dumbass frat buddy can see you LOLCAT joke.

Ask yourself gr33n: Would you rather have fourest abusing alts but still making good content, or no one abusing alts and everything is current era quality with equal sh*ttiness because there is no good content to filter? Good voting won't bring back site exposure. Good users left because casual interest faded. There were a lot of one hit wonders, and those users were in constant supply, and thousands of viewers lurked. That is why ytmnd succeeded. YTMND is basically a fad that has faded into obscurity.

By trolls I mean grouchy negative users (that could mean downvoting gimmicks or mean users like umfuld and to a lessor extent you). I still don't understand why there can't be a middle ground.. More people abused alts at ytmnd's peak, but YTMND still flourished. Why was this? ytmnd's userbase didn't just gradually decline either; there was a dramatic drop off in march of 2007. Fourest abusing alts didn't suddenly make other users compete in ratings. Ratings didn't inflate until 2008.

I think you know what I am trying to say. People started making alts because the voter base struggled to support the userbase of site makers. And because ytmnd stopped being moderated heavily, there was no risk in cheating. I didn't start using an alt until this year right before tourney 2. I was bored and careless, and I was trying to be a crusader who double fived some sites that I liked, and all the tourneys. That is the truth. Only politics could twist the reality as much as it has been.

If I had just given 100 less votes that no one cared about, on an alt that no one noticed, I would have been exempt from this conversation. Basically, my justification boils down to this: the horse was dead before I beat it, and there is no resuscitating what is no longer alive. The true reason why people downvote your sites more than mine, is simple: your attitude. I have shown that while my voting habits have changed, my ratings have not so much. Also, your style was destined to be more niche than mine, considering the fact that I appeal to the emotion of nostalgia, and you make pretentious art that appeals to intellectuals.

Also, correlation does not equal causation. I waited a year before I changed my voting habits, mostly because more balanced voters began to leave. I never personally intended to be a heavy voter, but ytmnd really started to suck, and so I wasted my time.

There was one example for me that pushed me over the edge and turned me into the YTMND Rating Rage Monster I am today. Dmaz posted a Classic Style site. And it sucked. I wasn't that funny. It wasn't presented in anyway that deserved extra attention. Yet that site bobbed up and down on and off the bottom of Up and Coming for 3 days. Getting 50-60-75-finally 100 votes. And I was like F*CK THIS. Me, Hank, many others, each of us could post a dozen better classic style sites than Dmaz's EVERY DAY FOR YEAR.

It wasn't a good site but because: ytmnd.com/users/dmaz/votes - because of that it had to be among the Top 10 most visible sites on YTMND that week - even though it sucked. Just because someone who voats 5 posted a sh*tty CLASSIC STYLE SITE - had to be on the front page. And you're delusional if you think that crap didn't effect YTMNDs popularity. F*cking delusional. Someone came here clicked on a site on the front page they didn't see the best content they saw who was on your contact list.

And they didn't come back.
