i think the good (meaning worthy of existence) sites have about quadrupled in number (daily) and the quality of them has gotten progressivly better...and users are much more critical than they were in the past (look at the trash that shows up in worthwhile)...however the totally crap sites have increased 1000-fold so it can seem like we are drowning in vomit...alot the angst i see i often attribute to long-time users just finally getting fed up with the crap sites and not necessarily a decline in YTMND
I hate the fact that I've felt so fed up with ytmnd lately... I've spent like a ridiculous amount of free time on this site for over a year, it's caused me to fail socially, I finally thought I was over it and didnt need it anymore and here i am clicking the refresh button on the main page and typing with kindof bad grammra. :-(
No, it's pretty much sh*t. That being said, I'm going to try to fix it and if I fail I'll just end up killing it off. It is time to usher in a new era of iron fist bannings and deletions. The mod panels are coming along nicely, within the next couple weeks, site moderation features will be finished at which point I get to start writing the user moderation functions, allowing me (and select mods) to punish, delete and ban users with ease. Bring on the contempt.
i really dont get what is so bad....all you have to do is look at the u & c and i consistently see good ytmnds......if anything i think the quality has gotten MUCH better, just cause there are crappy ones too that means its bad....i think it is fine....i really dont see what everybody is whining about.
1) True. 2) Well done. 3) I don't think it's worth dwelling over. The amount of effort that goes into production of the average YTMND is greater, and as a result, those "brush them under the rug" kind of bad YTMNDs are less common. Nowadays the people completely lacking in sense of humor have access to Imageready instead of just Adgif, they've learned how to rip DVD frames rather than just using a single frame from GIS, etc.
This shift ushers in a new brand of YTMND that us older users quite simply love to hate. You see, we used to be able to immediately tell that a YTMND was going to be of some quality the moment we detected a decent amount of effort put into it. But now, the idiots have learned how to sync, and much more. And we hate their guts for it.
The bad YTMNDs are quite inconveniently disguised as good ones nowadays, but that doesn't mean there were ever any less of these sh*tty YTMNDs filling up the front page. This feeling of disillusionment, it's certainly no new development. I'd be willing to bet it's been around since the dawn of the website itself.
It's terribly true. There were days when this site was just soi fun and hysterical I couldnt click refresh fast enough. . Now you just need to look once every 3 days and you pretty much got anything funny in a few minutes. Like the up ancd coming. When U&C first came out, it was almost a completely new list every hour. Now it's just the same crap recycled for a day or two. Really sad to see this happen. I feel bad for max because he dumped so much time into the site, trying to make it better.
I feel YTMND is in its 14th or 15th century right now. Hopefully these tough times will start a blooming. Although I had my share of laughs over the school year, it seems the past couple of months haven't really been up to par. Maybe the whole site is in a less optimistic mood given Max's money woes.. less people viewing and creating sites means less bandwidth to pay for I suppose :P Have your rebirth, ytmnd.
PS Its not like I've contributed anything worthwhile anyways, point is moot.
It's not all bad. Sure, the consistency in quality just isn't where it used be, but there are still gems out there. There has always been a sea of crappy sites in proportion to good ones, the only difference is that ytmnd's user base has increased exponentially. The old system just doesn't work anymore because it was designed for a smaller audience. Now treasure hunting is even harder than it was before. The only thing that really concerns me is that there is so much less traffic in Up and Coming.
I don't feel like YTMND has taken a complete step in the wrong direction. The site has come a far ways since '05. I don't notice as many random downvoters, at least not as many as during the days of inkdrinker and tehpwner2 or whatever his name was. There is still good, original content made. People can still make funny sites based on fads. The real problem is that it seems like the good is being flooded out by the bad and repetitive. The only stuff that really annoys me nowadays is the purposely crappy
Too many people making sites about YTMND, sadly including this one. People aren't going to post this somewhere or show it to their friends. That is how we will become big again. Regress from this post-modern era where everything is self-referntial and just make sites that are funny...that anyone can get without prerequisite knowledge of 20 internet memes. It becomes too formulaic, with users trying to duplicate the success of other sites by going back to the same well ad infinitum...
Nobody wants to spend hours on a site unless there is a buffer, some familiarity that will ensure it being voted into the Up & Coming...which is understandable. I think some of the site creators underestimate the ytmnd audience and how quickly they will pick up references. Most people here are going to pick up on an incredible array of pop culture.
