death to (refresh)

Greetings all,
Today we have reached a historic milestone with the YTMND template. No longer will users need to refresh pages to try and get the audio and image to synchronize. Thanks to syncan (ironically enough), who wrote some clever Javascript and Flash, we now have the ability to ensure synchronization of image and sound, plus the benefit of sound working on any browser that supports flash.

Announcement YTMND is here.

UPDATE:Option added in your user options to turn off the flash preloader if you are having problems with it.

For the time being, this will only work with MP3 files until we can figure out how to convert WAV on the fly reliably with no spacers.

For those of you that didn't catch it, the game revolution contest is over. As is the Dew Army contest.

For those who are saying "Flash is for Newgrounds!": yes you're correct. And that just isn't what this is. It's a method for buffering image and sound before it's displayed, with some polling for synch. In the end, it's still an image and a sound file. It's not a Flash movie.

"Video clips" and FSFs on YTMND aren't anything new. Does it really make making them any easier to make? No. People were going to make them, preloaded or not. Does it encourage them? I don't know, but maybe give it a chance instead of having a YTMNDSpasm.

Also, there does seem to be some issues with using VBR (variable bit rate) MP3s, and very low quality MP3s (ie. < 48Kbps, 22Khz). I believe that's the primary reason you might get a "slowed down" or fast-sounding MP3.

I just realized how many times I used the word "make" on my previous comment, and my head imploded. I apologize.

I like you Syncan, but I feel that part of the funnny-stupidity in YTMND was the bad synching and crappy sites.

Well there goes my idea for a "non-crappy site" preloader. :(

It's fine. Users can opt to use the preloader, or go without. If it's intentional bad synching you want, just modify the delay on the preloader.

Any thoughts on the "Classic YTMND" suggestion? The category would display the top 5 "classic structure" sites that have been voted in by... max, or moderators, maybe?

YTMND makes me laugh. Whether it's a longer clip or a still image with a looping song, isn't that all that's necessary?

kemosabe summed it up, the point is that humour is relative, what inkdrinker finds funny may not be what syncan or I find funny, everyone has a different sense of humour and everyone appreciates different YTMNDs. Who cares if a few screamers are made? someone who likes them will find them funny, while those of us who don't can appreciate all the other YTMNDs made by other people.

and besides, Inkdrinker is the kind of cynical person who finds absolutely everything an insult to his beleifs, and then trys to convince others to agree with his point of view with flowery statements and "straw man" arguments. He beleives his intellegence makes him superior to everyone else. He may have good points sometimes but on average he's just a whining fool, seriously people, don't listen to him.

The preloader is encouraging people to make more video clip sites because it's making it more accessible. Less people made those sort of sites because they knew it wouldn't turn out well, now that they can do it with ease, more ytmnds are just going to end up being "lol heres a famly guy clip frum yesterdays episode injoy!!!"

Sounds great, but my http://darthmillionaire2.ytmnd.com site still requires refreshing for me...:( Is my MP3 file too large, or am I doing something else wrong? Or does this simply apply to all YTMND's made AFTER this announcement? Thanks beforehand for the help.

I can't belive people are so dumbstupid to actually COMPLAIN about this. I love this feature. If people make flash-esque YTMNDs that are funny, who the f*ck cares? They're FUNNY. HUMOR. This isn't some kind of f*cking modern art fest. If it helps people make funny sites, than all you f*cking nublits need to shut the f*ck up and go slit your wrists or something. This feature is gold.

I don't see a problem with the sync itself, however, I do see the site leaning toward those f*ggy clip sites and thus ranking them high, getting more exposure...thereby not giving the unique and funny simple sites exposure...sooooo, it could hurt the site bc we won't get to see the cool sites. & again, plenty of sites already have movie clips, flash, etc...

& what makes this site fun is that any toolbag can create sites, vote, etc... it's pretty interactive unlike that f*ggot newgrounds site...users won't participate if the level of material is all "Syncan-level" then again, i doubt 100,000 syncan-type-nerds will flood the site with cool looking graphics. & if it did oh well, more users will come like they do to other sites.

To convert WAV to MP3, use LAME. (You may have to use SoX first to convert WAV with ADPCM to plain PCM WAV.) To play back an MP3 gapless, store the length of the WAV in milliseconds and then have the ActionScript restart the MP3 every so often, with overlap turned on.

"Why would a site owner intentionally make his site less unique? The answer is to attract more viewers. This, my friends, is the essence of selling out." Site's been selling out a looooooooooong time, first with all the ads (which is where a decent amount of Ebaums hate comes from) then the big blow came with YTMNSFW. Tons of good sites that advertisers wouldnt want to back got tucked away there (NSMB), which turned into a free for all of mutilated cats and bouncing tits. Sellllllllouuuuuttttssss
