Well folks, the machine that hosts the forums is offically dead. The disk that contained the forums is hosed. I have yet to do a full damage assessment but things arent looking good.
Read more for info.
On another note the server fundraiser is going well. Please keep up with your donations, the sites that are being donated to are getting huge increases in traffic!

It's possible that the database is okay, but at the moment the server wont even boot. This machine was the birthplace of yourethemannowdog.com and ytmnd.com. It also houses all my other dev projects and my mail server.
I'm considering getting data recovery on it but so far the quotes I've gotten have been pretty hefty.
If you know of any data recovery specialists, please leave a post here. As for the content server, thanks so far to everyone who has been donating. On Christmas I will be donating $20 to each of the current 120 moderator favorites of my own money as a little holiday gift to the entire community.
I'll try to keep you all informed as to what's going on.

are we talking dead hard drives? as in platter recovery? there are ways to do it. I work for a company that does computer forensics among other things. you're welcome to ask for a quote though I'm not sure what the price range you've been getting on quotes so far has been...
Good, come to forums.ogrish.com and see how its really done. And the sigs proly killed the
drive, talk about f*cking overkill. Wankers.
| Of course, you're right. That is, if you ignore the simple fact that we all hosted our sig pics on outside sources as opposed to somewhere on the YTMND forums' private space...
If the forums are REALLY gone, hows about the new forums using your existing YTMND userid/password so that every YTMNDer has an account. Would it be that hard to modify forums software?
Also, open source YTMND? Think how rad that would be for making YTMND rule.
Also, sorry for your loss and I love YTMND.
How hosed is hosed? Does the machine still recognize the disks? What was the file system?
If it was FAT or NTFS, the drives are probably recoverable. Less so for EXT2, and even more remote for Reiser, or UFS.
If it was FAT or NTFS, and the machine still recognizes the drive, I can probably do it...
If not, there's a google ad on this page that seems to be reasonably cheap.
See, max, even the people who most likely have been flamed out of the forums in embarassment want the forums back (as I don't recognize half the people that replied as forumers, although nobody probably recognizes my f*ggot-ass name as Introducing...). Da forumz iz good mah n*gg*, da forumz iz good.
"I love how 95% of the people who commented aren't even regular forum visitors...." The simple answer to this is, because the forums are a vocal minority. Not just that, but forums tend to bring in a mere fraction of its associated mainpage revenue. Chances are, whatever community is brewing in that toxic pool of fecal matter is not going to recieve stellar treatment.
Hay compute how about you shut the f*ck up, realize where you're at (besides sitting at your computer) and think "Immaturity on the internet... isn't really very serious business." You're on the net f*g, quit taking everything so srsly. Personally, I think the YTMND forums breed very smart and intelligent people who visit for the sense of escapism it offers.
"You know max, you say 'the forums are dead' like it's a bad thing. It's pretty much just a
breeding ground for pedophiles, fourteen-year-olds, and unparelleled immaturity on the
internet." Breeding ground for fourteen year old's? Hey okay, whatever you say. Anyway these forums were probably the pinnacle of absolute sarcasm and irony on the entire innernet. Come back soon :'(
The pinnacle of sarcasm and irony? More like the pinnacle of stupidity. Most of the time the general forum is filled with parodies of parodies of threads, all with absolutely nothing relevant or interesting in any of them. Only a 14 year old who is still discovering that girls piss out of a different hole than they give birth would find that funny.
also, luigi, the reason you like the forums so much is probably because you have the maturity level of the average 14 year old. seriously, what 20+ year old calls someone a f*ggot like it's actually insulting them? it's so over used that it doesn't have any meaning anymore, and above all, it's extremely childish...but I guess that's why you like to use it, eh?
Hay computef*g, nobody gives a sh*t enough about what you say to bother to read all that. I can summarize:
Blah, blah, blah, 14 year olds, girls, puberty joke, i'm so mature and intelligent, ignore what other people say, look how better I am than everyone, 14 year olds, nobody gives a sh*t about me so i'll act superior on the INTERNET: SERIOUS BUSINESS.

MAX,--- I was thinking ... in addition to the "Sponsored YTMND" box, which lists 5 top sponsored sites by total dollars... Why not add a "TODAY'S SPONSORSHIPS" .. This way you breath some new life into the sponsorships by people who want to see thier sites on the front page but cant afford to top the $60plus totals currently in the "ONGOING SPONSORED BOX" . Keeps the sponserships competitive on a daily basis, & will eventually shake up the ongoning box, which is currently stagnant.
