Like the rest of the state, Santa Clara County is facing a financial crisis that is precipitating deep cuts to services. The County is seeking ways to cover a $230 million dollar budget shortfall, and is eyeing programs to slim down in the effort. Many of these cuts are coming in the form of reduced funding for programs such as drug and alcohol treatment programs. The County recently put on hold a plan to eliminate dozens of positions in its mental health department. At the state level, the recently passed budget contained some 15 billion dollars in cuts to education and social services. While the state budget did include sales tax increase, there was no income tax increase. The state and counties are left with placing the burden of the budget shortfall on the most vulnerable segments of the population. Nauseatingly, it is the sales tax increase that has generated some of the loudest grumbling. You are correct, Clinton DID balance the budget, with a republican house and senate. Rush helped out the most at that point being the speaker of the house. And the reason that government grew under Bush is because of Nancy Pelosi and the fact the the dem's controlled the house... Got any more "facts" that I can disprove?
