First off, thank you for taking time to explain all of this. I know given the circumstances, it's hard for you to realize my sincerity here; but seriously, thank you.

Secondly, I think we're at a point where we can continue discussing this like two civilized human beings without resorting to name calling. We've both done it, and I apologize.

I'm sorry if I can't relate to being a YTMND super star and that you're a specific target. I'm sorry if I've fallen into the same category as the other trolls.

That said, I can relate to Max. I am a web programmer myself. Dealing with spammers/bots is a tricky business. Without going apeshit crazy with capchas and/or similar technologies, there's very little he can do about them. He probably doesn't want to worry you, as you are a dedicated user, and he may or may not want to come off as incompetent--I'm not saying that he is--not necessarily having a good answer. It's kind of sad, but spammers are a fact of life.

I could go on for pages about spammers, but I digress..............

Here's my feedback.

Your site is basically a looped YouTube video with different audio, right? You didn't make the video, and you didn't make the audio. I'm cool with that as long as you can make something new with it. For me, this isn't much different than the original video. Yeah, the audio is technically different, but it doesn't really change the concept. It's still a time-lapse of Noah aging. So this rates about a 2 for me. If you are interested in how I generally vote on sites, have a look at the comment section for rip-nujabes.ytmnd.com.

I'm not really a good representative of the average YTMND voter, though, so I'll try to address what others might think of this site. Some will automatically downvote this because the Noah thing is old and we've seen it all before. Some will automatically upvote this because the audio and image make sense together. Some will automatically downvote this because it's not funny to them. Some will automatically upvote this simply because of They Might Be Giants. Some will automatically downvote this because it's "stolen."

I'd like to also point out that a site like this would probably have done pretty well back in 2006/2007, what many consider to be the "Glory Days of YTMND." There were a lot of users who were more than happy to give 5's to anything that was halfway entertaining. Not to mention that there was far more traffic back then, meaning that rather than getting a measly 3 votes and 105 views, you'd probably have at least 20 votes and 1,000 views. Times have changed, and this place has become a bit more barren. It's much harder now to have a successful site than it used to be, in my opinion (others would disagree with me on that, though).

Anyway, sorry to go on for so long; I get long-winded sometimes. If you ever want more feedback or

A. If you actually had 20 people (not fucking alts) that were dedicated enough and supportive enough to 5-star all of your sites, good for you. I doubt you'd be able to muster up such a dedicated audience however. If you did, they'd already be active YTMND-ers. I still wouldn't consider that vote abuse. That's one vote per person per site. The way it SHOULD be.

B. I don't visit YouTube on a regular basis, but on occasion if there's a site I like, I will "thumbs up" (or whatever the system is, i can't remember). Just because I don't visit YTMND regularly, does that make my vote any less relevant?

C. Alt/vote abuse aside, I believe in the YTMND system. I believe that regardless of how many dedicated users you have on your side your site will garner a rating that is appropriate. You may not like the rating you get, but that's just how life is. Deal with it. Learn from your mistakes and improve over time.

D. This really isn't about me or my wife, but what she chooses to do with her account is her business. I'm aware of the apparent bias she displays towards my sites. I try not to share my sites with her without first letting the site take its natural course in RC. Regardless, she is supportive of all my efforts nonetheless and I couldn't ask for anything less.

If it weren't for hyperspeed.ytmnd.com and keyspace.ytmnd.com getting such phenomenally high scores, I'd completely agree with you. However, these two sites choke up just as much if not more than your site here, but they managed to sit on Top Rated all week. Why is this? I don't know exactly, but I do think success here at YTMND has a lot to do with chance, and there are two things that make your odds worse. The first is that it's 2010, Year of the Downvoter. The second is that you make art sites, which are not well received by many members of the community (they think this place should be all about humor). This is my theory, anyway.

Okay, at the risk of sounding like I'm complaining, I honestly was not expecting very much, but I'm still curious about this. My latest site got a 4.57 and only 200 votes. How did that happen? 300 used to be the amount that kicked you off Up and Coming, and if you managed to get in Top Rated too you could probably get over 1,000, but that was way back when, I know. Users have left, but for some reason there's still discussion going on in the news. So I figured I'd ask you guys what you think.

Suddenly we have tons of users and now we seem to have a max of 200 browsing the front page every week. What happened here? Is this Hill Valley or is it Hell? What do you think caused all the users to leave? How do you think we can bring back a large userbase?

I think I read most of the comments in this journal post twice. I feel very concerned about the situation that is creating here. I sense so much hate, whether it is staged or not. I don't want to talk about me, but I have to tell you this: I'm quite a sensitive person and I visit this site maybe 20 times a day. I like to see what people share, I like the funny stuff, but when I look harder I read the comments, I see downvotes driven by pure hate, jealousy or even for no reason at all (dare I say "just for fun".) And since the site is up again the negativity is palpable more than ever. I'm even experiencing it firsthand, thanks to a user who doesn't act like his/her blood is flowing to his/her brain. As Max said in a post in 2007 (I'm paraphrasing,) freedom of speech is ok, but when the shit hits the fan you have to spend a lot of time cleaning the fan. And a soapy sponge is not enough.
I like to imagine this site as a place where you have fun, reflect and discuss about what people feel important to share. Do we really have to fight against each other, for things which don't even concern our role in this community? Do we have to scream and offend, saying the obvious most of the time? Do we have to judge, condemn and bash just because we think we have a right to say whatever we want?
I live in a place where school books used to be regulated by the "government" and still there's a lot to complain about openness. Stephen Colbert often jokingly says "Freedom isn't free." Maybe he's right, if you think about it. We have been given a chance to express ourselves, by a sole person. Let's not spoil this opportunity, we cannot take anything for granted. For the sake of this community, behave yourself. All of us. Me too.

The only thing that makes sense is high quality streamed videos in HTML 5 or flash. I don't know enough about media platforms/plug-ins to get specific though. We can solve the dilemma of losing some essential gif qualities by integrating a looping feature (where the creator can set if a video loops or not).

I like the gif too but honestly no one outside of ytmnd cares about it. People kind of view it as amateurish because it denotes the geocities era of the internet, so it makes a bad first impression. The gif just hasn't quite attained the cult nostalgic status that 8-bit graphics/chip tunes have, unfortunately.

Like I said, ytmnd might lose its identity, but that identity doesn't really sell anymore. YTMND became popular because it filled a vacuum that was there until everyone figured out that youtube existed, not because it prided itself on forcing creativity through size/color limitations (as noble the concept may be).

Of course, ytmnd shouldn't get rid of the gif completely, because you really can't, unless you want to ripe out the foundation of this website as well as all its content. Mainly I just think it should be tucked away in its own little area, where it is not the sole attraction.

there should be a section on the new front page where users can post pictures of themselves. like, it could be called "Pick List" and we could like, post pics from facebook or just mirror pics or like pics of whatever. i was edward cullen for halloween, and i've been dieing to get my costume pics onto ytmnd. i looked really good. i had sex that night. with a big fat pirate in the bathroom at a party. that is not a lie.

plus, i really want to see all kinds of real life user related stuff, like what cereal max ate for breakfast or what toilet paper brand feels the best on fourest's butt. like, if i could see a fourest-uploaded pic taken from the view of him sitting on the toilet, and you can see the opened Charmin Ultra Soft pack sitting next to the tub and like fourest's leg is blurry in the bottom corner of he pic, haha! that would be awesome.

if you could upload .txt files or microsoft word files, that would be cool. i wanna read poetry, short stories, emails, journal entries, whatever. if a user made it, i wanna see it.

everything i said is a lie. not the fat pirate part, unfortunately. i was fingering her butt and eating her out. i'm still waiting for my lips to break out and the roof of my mouth to turn to liquid.

By "both these sites," you mean this abbreviated clip, and the one on break.com from which someone literally stole and made a YTMND without changing or creating anything new.

I understand that this isn't really all that funny. In fact, it's pretty cold hearted, since it's just some kid crashing into a pole. This is more or less a contrast to my other site, [site haaawbog:site], where there is a happy ending (the child is OK).

The moral of the story is, this site and my other one are just minimalist examples of actually doing something new, and not just regurgitating something from somewhere else. If I wanted to watch someone get hurt, I'd go to cracked. I come to YTMND see art and creativity in its crudest albeit often humorous forms.

I look at the creativity of the idea presented, the effort put into it, and how much different from its source material a site's content becomes by moving to the YTMND format. Originality is highly valued for me, as are good loops. I also make a point of not "upvoting" or "downvoting," which to me means voting solely to change the total score to one's liking (if I "upvoted," you'd get a 5). I could actually go on--I have a few exceptions to these guidelines--but I think you get the picture.

In your case, you found a couple of nice images online, did a little editing, and put it to some nice music. For me, this typically falls in the 3 range unless there's a particularly clever concept at work. What could possibly bring your site to a 4 is the cohesiveness of the concept and the subtlety of the editing. To be sure, the aesthetic is appealing to me, but if I voted solely on that, I'd be giving 5's to all kinds of stuff that don't deserve it. Kind of like the thousands of users who voted 5 on anything with Daft Punk back in the day, even if it was paired to some completely irrelevant cat gif found somewhere on the internet.

I hope I'm not coming across all high and mighty here (like Umfuld, perhaps). I just finished watching roughly 80% of your sites. I did this because a) I like this site and wanted to see if you had more like it, and b) I've seen comments of yours that seem to indicate that you are a misunderstood user and I was curious why.

Regarding (a), I didn't find any site I liked nearly as much as this one, at least not in the same way. The ones I liked most from what I saw were the sites involving rod and the sites with static landscape-y pictures with mood music. All my votes pretty much landed in the 1-3 range.

Regarding (b), if it's not already clear, I don't get your work. Is there any definition to it? Or is it just art being art? Because if it's just art being art, then I don't understand any of your objection to the artfag contest (which I loved, by the way).

I don't know why I'm going on like this. Maybe because I want to somehow have something to show for spending all that time viewing sites I didn't really like. Maybe because it's late. I don't know. I should just end this now awkwardly.
