Ever heard of journalist Joe Galloway (Vietnam War field correspondent, co-author of the book that became "We Were Soldiers")? I don't know the specifics of O'Reilly's "combat", but keep in mind that not all field reporters are wusses. (As a favor, find out for yourself who Joe Galloway is before blowing me off.)
'in combat' implies participation. you know, being a combatant. Unless he was standing there with his pen going 'pew pew pew the PEN IS MIGHTIER' then he's obviously trying to make himself sound more certified than he really is. And it's a stupid arguement anyhow, wether it's legal or not some commanders will torture and others will not, because it ultimately comes down to their personal ethics, laws can only really regulate what's done afterwards. There is no control of a battlefield from capitol hill.
