I found out why it didn't die: "actually it is absolutely possible. If a cat spreads out at the beginning it will get enough air friction to slow itself down, then the cat goes into the classic spring stance that absorbs much of the impact and off it goes. Our physics teacher told us this. But, yes this was a smart cat. Most cats go to the spring state right away and...die.". I got that off the internets
