He was called Robotnik, because back then it was trendy to have villains with Soviet Russian sounding names. Eggman sounded too Japanese/kiddy for the audience Sega was targetting.

Actually, in Sonic 2, in the airship level, you can see "Eggman" written on the sides, though he was called Robotnik in the manual and stuff.

Um...HL3's soundtrack reminds me of Sonic a surprising amount... Seems anyone in a formal dress can make it into this sort of thing...but still funny. BTW, Eggman is Robotnik's first name. They just call him that in SA2 because his father is in the game as well. (so they can't use last name)
