indeed for this, use the magnitude 9.81 [m/s^2] to be safe, as the basis coordinate system is arbitrarily chosen. See, that's the point, the physics doesn't change no matter what coordinate system you choose. But still, 9.81 is just 'g', which is the ~1/r^2 gravity field const from the mass of our planet in F=GMm/r^2=gm. Anti-gravity would have to be way more complicated, hense the cat. Also toast.
