Well... I mean, what do you want -racial hatred is a great unifier - look at the current election cycle and its hotbutton issue. America didn't even WANT to be in the war til the propaganda machine started to work its magic. What's amazing is that, come VE/VJ day, it didn't take but a few years for popular opinion to turn around while we rebuilt Japan and Germany. All of a sudden, they're our best friends, and the Red Chinese are the boogeymen. But times changed, the media doesn't manipulate anymore ;/
GobanzoMon, I DID read your comment. No need to sound like you are going to put a mafia hit out on me! I really appreciate input from everyone. I thank you. However, I do not like the idea of one image pasted together. It’s just an esthetic choice... I don't like the slow speed either but.. I would rather have it at a comfortable speed for everyone, not just for those of us old enough to vote.
Er, good site, but it's not really racist. There was a lot of WW2 racist stuff, but hey--Japanese people /do/ look different than Chinese and others. And it was important to try and tell the difference at a glance. If only there was a way to tell an Arabic suicide bomber from the average Arab on the street...there'd be a lot less deaths in Iraq.
The comic is amusing, good music. You get a 2 because you, like a lot of ignorant people, apparently don't understand war tactics and like to label everything as racist. Stop looking at 1940 as if it should have the same values and opinions as people in 2006. Knowing your enemy is important in war, so quit whining about racism when that has nothing to do with it.
More food for undereducated America haters; that's fine. Good technical job and choice of music. People who scream racist should be required to provide a dictionary definition footnoted though. How did you expect a 1940's government to teach 18 year old farm kids with 50% literacy rate how to tell the difference between variations of humanity they had never seen before? They might as well have been martians.
Old time propaganda is funny, but anyone who doesn't understand why this was done is basically a semi-sentient simpleton. World War II: Three countries- Germany, Japan, Italy---banded together to really, truly, try to take over the world. Very racist countries. The U.S. trained thousands of troops, who might be plopped into a jungle, and at any moment somebody might pop out of the bushes in a uniform and carrying a rifle, and they'd have to make a split-second decision on whether to shoot them or not.
Yes...so much racism that Japan is the Number 2 economy in the world. You know why they do so well? They work hard and don't blame Racism (whether it exists or not) for their problems. I would also add that Asians in america have by far the lowest crime rate and highest litteracy. Also, they hardly steal bikes.
Last time I checked Megumi's YTMNDs don't have any anime at all he's just a person with a degree in east asian studies who likes to laugh at the crazy sh*t on Japanese TV just like most people. And I would not run around with my a handgun slapping back and forth in my loincloth or keep a loaded weapon anywhere near my jewels for that matter.
It's still nowhere near as bad as the Empireal Army forcing monks to break their vows of celibisy and rape young children, having brothers rape sisters, publicizing a contest between 2 officers to see who can behead 100 people with a sword first, making the young have sex with the old, or raping women to death with a bamboo pole and leaving them in the middle of the street for the family to find the next morning. The only problem is east asians decend from the Chinese so they share some similarities.
Per my comment above, I still don't understand what is "racist" or "demonizing" about this. An interesting study of wartime/military propaganda, sure. Inaccurate? Sure. But seriously, there was a lot of racist propaganda in WW2, and a lot of racist material now, and this does not resemble either. Yes, the "expect to get shot" line might qualify, but besides that...will someone point out what they see is racist about this?

Racism is the belief that you are superior based only on genetics this is based on the nationality only because the chinese and the japanese are all decended from the same people and therefore share the same genetics. And in case anyone is wondering where all this useless knowledge is coming from I'm an anthropolgist and historian specialising in east asian cultures and world war II.

This cartoon is racist, and dosen't appear to even offer any useful tips to the soldiers it's aimed at - demonizing tropes like "Japs" being bucktoothed aren't true at all, they're just spread to make the Americans think lowly of their enemy.

In my US History class, someone brought this in and we spent a couple of classes discussing and debating racism in wartime. A modern example of this was the racism towards muslims that was openly shown following 9/11. History repeats itself, and we can only avoid repeating the same mistakes if we remember past ones.
Ohhhh. Those poor Japanese. All they did was was rape Nanking. Do they even teach real history anymore in school? It was common for Japanese saboteurs on suicide missions to pretend to be Chinese so they could get close to strategic areas of the allied forces who were trying to protect China from the ruthless Japanese. It's not racism. It's called using every advantage you have to try and protect yourself.

Also, I get a big ego boost from someone discussing my comment. In reply, I stick with my comment and further state that it is stupid and none of us need to see such a long and pointless gif on YTMND because we all should know that the US portrayed the Japanese in a severely racist manner during World War II for the purposes of morale and propaganda. It's important that you address and discuss it in your US History class, because that's what it is: history. It's hasn't been topical for 50 years.
racist by today's standards, but don't forget, we were in a very bloody war with the Japaneese at the time this was made. I think it's perfectly normal to hate and casually disparage people you're at war with; it benefits you not to identify with people you routinely have to kill. plus, it was the 40's.

Racism in the 1940s towards orients was the status quo. We're still exploiting China of it's goods not to long ago with European sectors in China, while the U.S. had river patrols to protect it's interest and civilians there. In way, racism towards the race follows. Huns, Gooks, Nips, Yankees, what have you. It all comes in war, and afterwards it seems relations progess. That comic couldn't really tell who's Japanese or Chineese
amusing set of pictures, amusing ytmnd, but they're hardly racist. they may be somewhat inaccurate, but they designed as an aid for troops, not as propaganda. inappropriate, probably, but not racist. no claims were made about why the japanese are supposedly inferior as a race. i bet all the people involved probably held that belief, though...

Very interesting. I can't say I know what rating to give this. It is laced with such much blatant racism, however, given it was wartime, it's easy to see using common cultural differences like the geta and difficulty with l sounds to spot spies, I'm sure Nazis did similar things try to spot American spies in France or somesuch.
There were some really stereotypical finds in there so I'm giving a 4. However, ask many asians and they can in general tell the difference between Japanese and Chinese pretty easily. For Americans it would be about as much as the difference between Eskimo and Cherokee. Med Sea Europeans and Germanic. Egyptians and Central Africans.
Last time I checked, racism was claiming one race was superior/inferior to another. Pointing out superficial differences between races like skin color, face structure, etc. is in no way racist until you try to claim that those differences are more than superficial. Does anyone seriously think that informing people that the average Chinese and average Japanese look slightly different and displaying these differences so that soldiers can learn to spot is racist?
what is your problem? If you didnt realize Japan was at war with the world and an ally of Hilter. It exterminated millions of chinese civilians. This video you claim to be such an attrocity was actually quite informative and makes good sense when you in the middle of a war... You better know your enemy. Unless you think murdering millions of chinese and jewish people are a good thing. I found it quite informative. Not sure about the teeth thing, but the body type, skin and eyes are right on.
It seems to me that that was put out to avoid US troops from killing their allies. And if you think this is some kind of an atrocity, look at what Japan was doing. Get a f*cking clue, you liberal piece of trash. Would you prefer the US to have said "Of, its perfectly fine for you to rape and murder all those Chinese and Koreans"? Read history dating back to before the UN was founded.
But that was then. If people are going to hate what we did in the past, then learn from their mistakes, and don't follow their example. Otherwise, we'll just have more YTMNDs depicting American overgeneralizations of other countries. I mean, nowadays, people think "if it wears a turban, KILL THE NASTY TERRORIST!" This way of thinking, this oppression towards these people, along with the ostracizing of Islam- or this concept of sectionalizing- this prejudice- must stop.
