Thankyou, i agree completely. (btw spellcheck references)

IDK but 5.

true.
August 6th, 2006
(0)
huh i didnt get it...(oh well 5 anyway)
August 6th, 2006
(0)
Yes, it was a vision of the future of what WOULD happen to Garfield. Pay close attention to when Jon asks Garfield if he wants food, instead he wants Jon. We get the impression in this future Jon abondoned him, whereas in the present he is now more thankful so that the potential future doesn't happen.

(0)
Thank you for your hard work into all that effort of explaining, for that I'm gonna give you and 5 and a cookie *reachs into pocket* here ya go!

I'm surprised so many people can't comprehend anything they read.
August 6th, 2006

misconstrue* it's ok i forgive you
August 6th, 2006
(0)
1 for the depressing fact that the f*cking morons on YTMND have to have this explained to them
August 6th, 2006
(0)
I'm afraid I disagree, I think he dispells it in that paragraph, but when he talks about our imagination giving us a future that is either enticing or terrifying, he leaves it open. Perhaps its the enticing future with a family thats the imaginative vision. Its just another way to look at it.
August 6th, 2006
(0)
Yeah, I think people read too much into something simple.
August 6th, 2006
(0)
nice..but still...NEDM
August 6th, 2006
(0)
The REAL dead giveaway is where it says an IMAGINATION can "paint a future so vivid that it can entice... or terrify." In this case, terrify. Imagination should've been assumed.
August 6th, 2006
(0)
And? It doesn't make that series of comic strips any less cool...
August 6th, 2006
(0)
IMAGINATION could have created the enticing reality of having his family back, retards, stop making interpret sites as though they are fact
August 6th, 2006
(0)
Obviously, the writer still puts out comics
August 6th, 2006
(0)
Do you honestly think Jim Davis would kill off his main character? Even if Garfield has gone to sh*t?
August 6th, 2006
(0)
Meh, not my fault he made the slides go too fast. D:
August 6th, 2006
(0)
interesting... meanwhile, garfield is still a crappy comic rated slightly higher than the family circus...
August 6th, 2006
(0)
No, dumbass, I'm telling you he leaves it open, but for all the evidence you have that your version is right, I have evidence that mine is, so maybe I should make a stupid site about what I think and have it hit up and coming
August 6th, 2006
(0)
Yes, unfortunately my imagination has gotten the best of me many times. :(
August 6th, 2006
(0)
Garfield is the worst thing to happen to comics.
August 6th, 2006
(0)
You have evidence that he never said it was a vision? Whiteout isn't evidence, sorry
August 6th, 2006
(0)
Drusamson is right, it can be seen either way, what if he is starving to death in the house and the visions he sees are actually his denial of such an event. It would mean that all the other garfield comics are just his imagination. Don't jump to conclusions, some things aren't as simple as they may first be interpreted...
August 6th, 2006
(0)
It is possible that the Wikipedia theory is true. 1990 til now may all be Garfield's fantasies of life. But then again, Jim Davis isn't one to make something this dark.
August 6th, 2006
(0)
I remember when Adverb was witty, what ever happened to that?
August 6th, 2006
(0)
Whoa I insulted you so you suddenly think I'm unfunny I'm pretty sure that's the first time that's ever happened
August 6th, 2006
(0)
:) Adverb, if you have nothing of importance to add to any of this, please go away
August 6th, 2006
(0)
References.* But still, 5'd for truth.
August 6th, 2006
(0)
it's up to interpretation. yours isn't necesarrily "right"
August 6th, 2006
(0)
Adverb, when were you ever funny?
August 6th, 2006
(0)
I can't believe people are arguing about whether a cartoon cat from a non-continuous comic strip is alive or not. ...okay, maybe I can. GO YTMND GO
August 6th, 2006
(0)
"VISION CALLED TIME" he's just emphasizing that time is just a perception.
August 6th, 2006
(0)
Well, after this, Garfield went to sh*t. Davis stopped developing Garfield's character and now it's come to what we have today
August 6th, 2006
(0)
Can't wait until I finish my "Death of Marmaduke" YTMND... (no, not really)
August 6th, 2006
(0)
But what if Garfield's entire comic strip life as we know him is the vision, and if that moment in the house is just his return to reality, that, in his attempt to make sense of his life, he sees only as a vision and goes back into the denial he was previously experiencing as he starves to death. (The years of the comic could easily take place in hours in his own mind.)
August 6th, 2006
(0)
Yeah, look on the expression on his master's face. Its suprise, as in "Why are you hugging me?"
August 6th, 2006
(0)
KLike I said. I'm not ruling out the abandonment theory, but think about it. Would Jim Davis really be this unbelivably dark with Garfield?
August 6th, 2006
(0)
Thank you, one sane person!
August 6th, 2006

Wow.
August 6th, 2006

http://felinefantasies.ytmnd.com/ n*gg* stole my comic
August 6th, 2006
(0)
"Would Jim Davis really be this unbelivably dark with Garfield?" I wish. :P But I still think that this does fit in with the "meaningful" story-arcs he used to do, and while he may not mean that Garfield's life is all in his head, he probably left the opportunity open.
August 6th, 2006
(0)
His cat did just die, the real garfield, maybe for a bit he could be that dark with garfield the comic
August 6th, 2006
(0)
its still debatable
August 6th, 2006
(0)
"Jim Davis really be this unbelivably dark with Garfield?" I sure would hate to think that there isn't more to Jim than the happy-go-lucky Garfield crap he pushes out year after year, but yea, it's possible... have you ever broken out of your norm before?
August 6th, 2006
(0)
"Would Jim Davis really be this unbelivably dark with Garfield?" Also, remember "Garfield: His 9 Lives"? It depicted garfield living out 9 different lives and dying in each one... so yea
August 6th, 2006

^ It's impossible to make it a fact you dumb f*ckhead.

that means, he thought about how the rest of his time will be like... and then he starts to image all that stuff...
August 6th, 2006
(0)
I can't believe people are freaking out this much over that YTNMD in the first place...
August 6th, 2006
(0)
I really prefer thinking of him as dead. Nothing justifies reviving Garfield. Not even trying to stop NEDM references. (Noone make a NETTSNEDMR please)
August 6th, 2006
(0)
Not the YTMND, the actual comic, the YTMND is good either way
August 6th, 2006
(0)
the REAL deal when it comes to this whole death thing...it was a parody of a 1977 Italian film...check it out... http://felinefantasies.ytmnd.com/
August 6th, 2006
(0)
Feline Fantasies can suck a cock.
August 6th, 2006
(0)
Though that could also mean that every comic was the vision of Garfield while he was alone in the house. I kinda like that thinking so I'm sticking to thinking that Garfield isn't dead, just sitting alone in the house going crazy.
August 6th, 2006

August 6th, 2006
(0)
I remember seeing an old National Lampoon Magazine from the 80's I think. It spoke of the death of Garfield, and the article was several pages long.( I had no idea there was an actual Death in the comic stip, I figured this was a joke, but now I guess it was refering to this contoversy, and the "Back to normal" cover up that followed. The artwork looked authentic, but it showed Garfield being ripped to shreds by an invisible force, which was the Cheshire Cat. If anyone could find it, it'd be YTMND GOLD.
August 6th, 2006
(0)
It's art and I'll interpret it any way I want douchebag.1'd
August 6th, 2006
(0)
It's still better if he did die. :|
August 6th, 2006
(0)
you should have made a un funny truth ytmnd
August 6th, 2006
(0)
You need to add this: The reason why Jim Davis penned these comics was there was a death in his immediate family that came as a compleate shock to the family, and writing these comics was his way of expressing his grief and trying to get people to realize just how precious family is. Don't belive me? Look it up :-p

IT WAS A f*ckING DREAM YOU GOONS! Why are people reading so much into this? The ytmnd that's doing the rounds in the top 15 isn't accurate in the fact that the ordering is all screwed up, it makes it look far more bleak than it actually was.
August 6th, 2006
(0)
What's the song in this YTMND?!
August 6th, 2006
(0)
it still isnt the lasagna loving garfield i know of, very different mood in this comic

I already knew it was a dream, people are just dumbasses.

Looks like somebody doesn't want garfield to die. STOP WHINING!

August 6th, 2006
(0)
thank you, must be seen.
August 6th, 2006
(0)
Hey, f*cktards, it's a garfield comic strip, not a deep thought provoking piece of art. Theres no hidden meaning on death, quit looking too far into sh*t, cause there's nothing there.
August 6th, 2006
(0)
How the f*ck do you know Creamy? Also I like Garfield, the only reason you guys don't is cause Maddox said he sucked. "OMG MADDOX SAID SO LOL" not.

1 for lacking a sense of humor. Garfieldisdead is funny because of what it *seems* to say, not what it actually does.
August 6th, 2006
(0)
I'm giving you a two. This was a derivative work, and not a particularly inspired piece. You also forgot something very important -- "Denial", (in)conveniently hidden which implies Garfield wasn't facing reality. You wasted your time.
August 6th, 2006
(0)
Thank you. Agree, Also cocks.
August 6th, 2006
(0)
Thank you. I odn't care much for garfield, but the way he "died" was entirely heartbreaking. I can sleep in peace now. I also wet the bed. And now you know. Win!

August 6th, 2006
(0)
there are so many ways to interprit that series of comics... knowing Garfield, yours seems to be the most likely but it's still your opinion...
August 6th, 2006
(0)
the easier explanation is that jim davis continued to write garfield comics after that series. good game?
August 6th, 2006
(0)
explains it a bit...
August 6th, 2006
(0)
thanks for teaching me nothing asshat
August 6th, 2006
(0)
It was just Garfield's subcontious. Everyone has this little inner voice of what's right and what's wrong. Garfield's was just telling him that he's rejecting one of his greatest assets (Jon), a friend. This is just a comic that was supposed to jolt people out of their sense of immortality, that they'll live forever, and to show that if you dont cherish what you have at the moment it'll disapear. Just like that. This comic was probably out of grief, and I still think it's really genius.
August 6th, 2006
(0)
I agree with this interpretation.
August 6th, 2006

Gawrsh darn.

August 6th, 2006

+1 for not being a gay, irritating slideshow.
August 6th, 2006
(0)
In other words, people who think Garfield is so deep and dark that his whole life could be a delusion, they're retarded. It's not possible. If Garfield was starving, he'd steal food. He loves food, and wouldn't stand to be without it for more than 3 hours. He's stolen before.

Yes, but I think we can all agree that it would be a better world if Garfield WERE dead.
August 6th, 2006
(0)
It also says his only weapon is Denial... Hmm, his weapon against his lonely ness, and then he starts to imageion after that
August 6th, 2006
(0)
Whatever his true reasons for the comic... Reality fails. That's all.
August 6th, 2006

August 6th, 2006
(0)
better explanation than those depressing wiki theories/5!... btw NEDM is gay
August 6th, 2006
(0)
The theory is false, but not because of this reason. Just because Garfield had a horrifying VISION of TIME does not automatically imply that everything is a vision. A critic could say that it simply means that Garfield finally realized the pain of time after being abandoned. 1'ed.
August 6th, 2006
(0)
sage is right lol
(0)
fu*k jim davis and garfield. sh*t is lame
August 6th, 2006

Kinda like the comic strip where Garfield has sex with that black and they have mongoloid hucat babies.
August 6th, 2006

It's not that hard to notice what he's implying. I don't know how some can misunderstand it all. Good post!

1:Hallucinations are not rational. 2:Garfield mysteriously waking up in a bleak future with no explanation as to how he got there is not rational. Therefore 3: Garfield is mysteriously waking up in a bleak future with no explanation as to how he got there is a hallucination, not the reality.

thats good to know
August 7th, 2006

I construed the comic as Garfields imagination allowing him to create a bright delusional future after John has left him forever. It is open to interpretation and I like it better this way.

The first YTMND overanalyzed things and I'm not sure that this one helps matters by calling our attention back to it. I'm abstaining from voting, but be warned: I will not tolerate a "Garfield is dead" fad.

site your sources for this information
August 7th, 2006
(0)
I agree, if people actually kept up with the strip in the 80s and early 90s then they wouldn't be surprised to see something like this from Davis. The 9-lives series is really f*ed up and shows that Davis knows what he’s doing. Sadly today’s Garfield is nothing more then a marketing machine. Also Portugeez doesn't have to ref. his comments. Hes interpreting a piece of literature and doesn't need proof.
August 7th, 2006
(0)
god thank you. hardcore garfield fan here.
August 7th, 2006
(0)
LOL out of context.....if that statement was made during the frist strip then I'd agree but he had a short vision after his discovery that he was infacy alone and the comic states that constructed his own futor with his imagination...you lose.
August 7th, 2006
(0)
Also Garfield can suck my dick.
August 7th, 2006
(0)
Huh....that's pretty cool. 5'd
August 7th, 2006

You didn't really explain anything, not that it needs much explaining. Quite literally, how could Garfield be in a time where he "hasn't lived there for years," as he quickly realizes, without already being dead? He couldn't JUST start slowly starving to death the moment he woke up several years later. Just pointing out a different perspective for the slow ytmnders
August 7th, 2006

August 7th, 2006

I don't see how "denial" can translate into "refusal" or whatever you want it to be. It seems more likely that "denial" means he's denying his reality -- that is, he's denying that he's starving to death in an abandoned house. I don't have an opinion on the matter either way, but your logic isn't exactly bulletproof.

I don't hate NEDM, but with all these people crying out for it here where it's not needed, I'm just beginning to. :/ Nice explaination too, the garfield we all know and love is alive and well.

I'd think it'd be kickass if, when they decide to finally end the series, the last installment starts normally, but in the second to the last panel, he passes out, with jon saying "garfield, are you all right?". Then the last panel having a skinny, dirty malnourished cat, dead on the floor of that abandoned house...but it has a smile on its face.

I loved that storyline... Oh OFFICIAL JIM DAVIS MESSAGE During a writing section for Halloween week, I got the idea for this decidedly different series of strips. I wanted to scare people. And what do people fear the most? Why being alone. We carried the CONCEPT out to its logical conclusion and got a lot of responses from readers. Reactions ranged from "Right on!" to "This isn't a trend, is it? The comic was a CONCEPT designed to make one think about their life. It was never a real storyline.

If Jim says it's not real... It's not real. He's the creator, his say goes, Period.
