Well he can clearly throw a baseball, as shown in the movie a few seconds before this particular shot. Perhaps he was so close to the camera he didn't want to break the camera or kill anyone by hurling a baseball at them at point blank range? "Can't throw a baseball" indeed.
I mean, it's one thing to needle Tom Cruise for being a zany, kooky, loud Scientologist, but needling him for doing something that had to be compromised for a movie he was in?
