The blocks contain 5 squares because the thing is wider than a normal tetris well thingy is. Notice that when the long piece is horizontal, it is 5 long, vertical it is 4 long. They also did this at MIT and at Brown, and a bunch of other places with tall buildings and geeks with free time.
