See... I disagree. ytmnd is about creativity more than anything else. The Finding Forrester clip was emphasizing the absurd via repetition. If you want to do that, great... nobody's bitching. The truly great sites however are the ones that are creative and funny. Make a worthwhile contribution or gtfo.
benjaphar: Imho people come to YTMND to a) laugh b) occasionally be informed (unfunny truths etc) c) see neat and innovative stuff. If you think a is wrong, you're lying. Everyone enjoys a good laugh. The fact is, if a movie clip is funny, so what if it's "taken", it doesn't matter, people will find it amusing. This was the original premise behind yourethemannowdog.com which formed this site. Anyway, just my opinion. You have yours and i respect that. Btw, i'm not fyrestorm, but one of my YTMNDs did appear
I think I have to disagree with you some. Notice how Max's original YTMND made use of a different picture? So it wasn't like Max just ripped it from Finding Forester. Additionally I think making YTMNDs respective of YTMND roots it more like a hit or miss thing. Either you pick a real genuis sound clip with acoompanied picture or it's a failure (1'd). I don't know if Sitsu still has it up, but he made a GREAT repeat line YTMND of Weird Al that got better with repeated viewings.
I'll try to make an argument. Probably won't fit. In sites like yourethemannowdog.com, the short and awkward soundloop it in itself adds enough parody to warrent a higher rating, then let's say an animated gif that is a stolen clip that doesn't take advantage of of ther ytmnd format at all. Example, the only entertainment value of colbertword.ytmnd.com is the jokes already seen from the episode. Please don't bite me.
You both raise good points. Glad this stimulated some intelligent discussion :) Let's just not stray off course - I'm ranting about sites that "do not constitute a YTMND", according to capt. idiot, when the original YTMND, which DEFINED the genre, was taken from a movie itself. Downvote for not being funny, fine, but don't use a stupid argument like the one featured in this YTMND.
ftw. you're the man now dawg. also c*cks. I saw that at the end. DON'T TRY TO BE SNEAKY. And, To all the other idiots downvoting this thinking they're trying to prove a point. Come on now, You're wrong. Just admit it. Take max's advice, Rate for what it is, not for the material's origin. Most of the material in this awesome site is
I think what constitutes a five worthy YTMND respective of the YTMND roots is a YTMND that uses audio and images of something that were it not looped and used in a YTMND it would not be as funny. You're the man now, dog was probably not that funny in the movie, but Max singled it out, got the pointing picture of Connery and looped the audio with the awful text. If someone were to just get a clip from say Family Guy with a run on joke (the joke audio should be short and catchy!)
with nothing on the creators behalf that adds to the humor than it is, in my opinion, a one. To repost a respective clip and audio from a source with no change is like getting up on stage at an open mic and trying to get laughs for another comedians material. That is stealing and if you steal someone elses's funny, that makes one no better than Ebaum!
No. Look, we are encouraging entirely too many bullsh*t no-effort no-thought no-point YTMNDs by upvoting just any friggin' "Hey, I Recognize That !" movie-cap. In case you haven't noticed, the general quality of the front page YTMNDs has really sunk in the past few months. Upvoting/downvoting isn't just being nice/being mean. It's supposed to reward the best and brightest, and thin the herd of the old and weak. Some dv'rs are just *ssh*l*es, but some are actually doing their duty by 1'ing crap sites.

The difference is, "You're the man now dog" is one line repeated. The movie clips are the full set-up and punchline. I don't think they are bad and I can appriciate the work that goes into them, but if i want to watch Zoolander then I will watch Zoolander. Max said it best on "Larry David, No!", "FOR THE LOVE OF GOD THIS ISNT YOUTUBE. STOP USING YTMND AS A TV CLIP REPOSITORY."
If I wanted to watch a movie I'd go watch the movie (as said before). If it is a funny enough clip, I'm sure I can find it on YouTube, GoogleVideo, etc., etc. Taking an already proven funny scene and making a YTMND out of it is garunteed sucess. There is a fine line between ripping an entire joke from a movie and making a joke out of a joke - that is where voting comes into play.
it was just a still image, not a full scene from a movie. Also, when the joke/punchline/funny part of the ytmnd is THE EXACT F*CKING SAME AS IT WAS IN THE MOVIE, it deserves a 1. Max's site took that serious part of that movie and turned it into a joke and making it quite laughable. Its not the same as it was in the movie.
evilregal is a moron. in mod faves are oneliners with pics directly from, for example, Spiderman 2 "whoa, he stole that guys pizzas". max even posted a classic style with pic directly from the same movie. its about taking a one liner or moment out of context and repeating it forever. whether its bill and ted falling or owen wilsons guns, thats at true ytmnd.
"f*ggy short film" is indeed an overused phrase here on ytmnd, but in all honesty, most YTMNDers need to chill the f*ck out. it's a stupid website where people take words and pictures and slap them together by pressing a few buttons. the real work is done off the site if any work is done at all, and if it is a time-consuming edit, then it's like a day of work at most. but still, these things are time-wasters and one-note jokes. nothing more. stop taking it so f*cking seriously
I'm not going to downvote this, because I see where you're coming from, but come on. There is a reason YoureTheManNowDog.com isn't the top rated YTMND of all time. Truth is, that Snakes on a Plane site just took a video clip from some guys camera phone at a movie theatre. This isn't YouTube. So, it fails.
The SoaP site, by the way, was different in that it was about the audience response to the clip, not simply the clip per se. Another subtle difference in comedy value.
Your time would be more well spent if you ranted against the f*ggy short film mentality. There are dozens of 'f*ggy short films' in the HoF. The Ultimate Suffering, The Unfunny Truth, Right Now, etc. Stop this purism crap and base your vote on comedy and creativity.
"Standards are higher today." I disagree. Look at the number of 'epic maneuver' sites around 4.4 - just gifs taken from somethingawful's 'gif' thread and set to fad music.. my favorite classic sites are basically Image Macro's with audio and redefine the context of the original line while still being humorous/amplifying the humor. Even though I make gifs and sync sites that take a good while sometimes, it is frankly a lot harder to make a good classic ytmnd than a highly rated fad site.
Herein lies the defenition of classic ytmnd and non-classic ytmnd. If someone takes content from a movie, sound and image alltogether and does nothing to it, it's a f*ggy short film AND ripped material. Classic YTMNDs are a different story- in that they're usually a funny line from a movie with an accompanying image. There is one fundamental thing wrong with your case example as well- being that the scene from finding forrester (where the sound is from) and the picture of connery (film festival) are from
2 different places. I saw an account the other day that featured 2 whole episodes of family guy- chopped up into 10 segments per episode. Downvoting for this reason is completely understandable, but I strongly do agree that downvoting is a huge necessary evil. Not everyone's complete-crap-sites can be a 5, now can they :D
I do agree with sitsu though- Standards are much lower these days. Take someone doing something extraordinary, put "epic" music with it, and it's an "epic maneuver". I love picture, sound and text sites. They can often have just as much (or more) value as (than) a sync site. I try as hard as I can to abide by the ToS- inside jokes, etc. YTMND NEEDS downvotING and subsequently downvotERs- just vote SENSIBLY. I encourage "Mid"voting because it's not so much midvoting; it's more or less just voting Sensibly.
Downvoters don't make YTMNDs much of the time for good reason: Take a look at Inkdrinker's sites. He's a downvoter, and consequently his sites suffer (most being below a 3). This is the reason many downvoters (which is a vague definition of someone who might just be speaking their mind, by the way) are actually just alt accounts of people with sites that have great ratings. Take a look at Idownvote thieves (whose account will remain nameless), for instance :)
no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no Wrong, the site you're showing isn't from a movie..............................
you guys forget max has a zillion mod faves where the classic ytmnd has image and source from the same movie - look at lina and wee's sites as well. max even posted 'you stole my story' - etc. with the original YTMND it could have very well ended up being a pic from the movie had it been made today and not 2001. anyways, even xWaspx's definitions isnt totally fair. its about context. the Bill and Ted forever falling gif, Owen Wilsons guns etc' - there is a way to rip directly from a movie well.
Simply ripping a video clip that was presented in its original format as humorous is thievery. Same goes for taking an image that is intentionally SUPPOSED to be funny then presenting it as a YTMND, thus claiming it is your own work. That's the equivalent of a weak Dave Chapelle impersonation; it's unfunny, derivative, and pandering for cheap laughs.
Too much of YTMND today relies on either catering to the site regulars (fad jokes, compilations, etc), overbearing and unfunny "statements" that have been said a thousand times before, or from lifting jokes directly from their original content and presenting them in a format that is not at all funny (why watch a movie clip in a browser window?)
Do you know the difference between satire and just ripping something?? "You're the man now dog" is not the punchline in a comedy movie, thats what makes it funny, hearing it over and over again is poking fun at it, its a satire, removing the punch line from a joke in a comedy movie is not the same thing. I might as well tell a joke like "how do you fit 6 million jews in an ashtray?" on ytmnd, but then you'd downvote it, and I could make a bitchy site like this
Why is snakes bleeped? -1 if you did that, PM me if you didnt and ill +1. Actually, +1 anyways becuase the people who downvoted the other snakes site did not understand that the humor came from the audio of the crowd finishing the line. I hate you all and I hope you burn in an eternal hellfire while Satan poops in your mouth.
Bill & Ted Falling was humorous in the movie, but it didn't go on forever. The added comedy is in the fact that the gif and audio file were looped in just the right way to make it so that it appeared to go on forever. That didn't happen in the movie: the site creator did something to the material that gave it a new comical meaning. Ripping a joke out of a movie or Family Guy adds or changes nothing to the original.
