None of these sites have any point.
They aren't funny, they aren't clever, they do not provoke any emotion
whatsoever, they are just pointless wastes of webspace. I actually
appreciate the idea of the "anti-fad" and the promotion of less noticed
sites through a central hub, but the sites involved are just dull in almost every
case. No point.
After reading all the comments and looking at all the sites this is what I got from it. First of all I know that someday YTMND will be changed to make voting not as powerful. What HiveMindedIndividuals are trying to say - I think, is that fads are mindless and unimportant and that people follow them too much. Many ytmnds are made about black people only because one of the first ytmnd about black people was funny, n*gg* stole my bike. People then become less creative and instead of being original also try to
include black people in their ytmnd (that is one example). I don't know much else. It is hard for me to decipher the sites because they seem to include things about history and make strong statements. I liked thinking it through though and I, myself, like seeing different things. There are too many what is love ytmnds and after a while the flavor goes away. 5 + fav + my support in the future.
If you noticed also, all the sites they post are very original, or they seem to speak out against things that aren't creative. In In The Presence of Teenage Giants it seems to me that they are saying teenagers are giants because they influence the way other teenagers think or something along those lines. Automation seems to go over how everything in ytmnd seems automated and you are somewhat restricted. Just my interpretation really.
I like Dr-L337. I don't like fads. This is not about being anti-fad. This is about showing people sites that we want to be seen. Period. I know that some of you may want to see an up and coming with 15 of the latest Red Leader variations... but some other people want some variation. Here it is, motherf*ckers. Also, since the Dr-L337 group gets downvoted to hell and makes hilarious sites... I support them. By f*cking them.
You guys could probably tone down on the pretentious emo crap. I don't care how artsy or deep your YTMNDs can be, but you obviously know that at least half of YTMND doesn't like this stuff at all, yet you donate as much as possible to show off your apparently mad skills. If you're frustrated with a community that for the most part is based on making things that are funny, (even if those things may be repetitive or are against what you all find interesting) then you can plz gtfo.

This site annoys me because the damn comments page is too long, these would have been fine vaguely interesting-if-not-entertaining sites on their own, without me having to wait so long to see people bash them. Honestly people are coming here for entertainment, not art, so when art sites disappear without a trace its not a surprise and the artists should really know what to expect. Also, fads are fun because it allows people to interact with the site, whereas art just sits here and looks pretty.
I can't speak for anyone else in the group, but personally i'm not frustrated with the community, they can do whatever. I just want to see some different sites, and so i'm putting my money and time where my mouth is. If you don't like it, awesome, then take it upon yourself to get the sites YOU want to see on the frontpage. If you do like it, awesome, now you know where to find a few likeminded people. If anyone wants to figure out how this project classifies as pretentious or, as is implied, more pretentious than anything else on this site, please look up pretentious in the dictionary and explain it to me. As it is, people like to toss that word around because they heard it on tv one time without actually having a clue what it means.
If people use pretentious in such a way that it is interchangeable with a description of a certain aesthetic, which is how most people use it, then they're changing the meaning of the word into something that is worthless and not even a criticism. If they actually mean pretentious... then my point was that they'd have a hard time if they used the word accurately. If I am somehow wrong for assuming that the same word that 25% of people use in the comments section should be used accurately... I apologize.
People can say whatever they want... but if what they're saying has no meaning to anyone other than themselves... they might as well not say it. I have yet to see any specific critcisms of any of the sites that were presented. I've seen thousands of 'impressions' on people, but impressions are a limited pool to draw improvement from. The one thing helps me make better sites over all else is making sites. So until that stops being the case you can expect to see more of these.

To YTMND users: You know, you *do* have the choice not to view this. It's not as though you're hurting anybody by refusing to click on the link. The HMI group has made it clear that your votes and comments do not matter, and, as such, the choice remains entirely in your hands. The Hive is merely trying to bring to light some YTMND's they think deserve some attention because of their originality and the talent used to make them, among others. The YTMND format is not limited to fads and humor, although that
is the traditional YTMND aesthetic. Seeing as there is nowhere else to host these, and the fact that such hard work and thought is fading into obscurity, well. . . Also, these sites are no more 'pretentious' than any other form of art, and I see no reason to think they are any more 'High-and-self-important,' or 'f*ggy' than other sites. In short, if you don't like it, don't click it, bitches :P
cimmaonroffles: Classifying these as art is devaluating to true art forms. Some of these do have hard work involved, I agree, but for the most part, cramming images together with zomggalatic music doesn't make art, even if you think it's edgy. I don't think that just because you make something that took you a long time should classify it as art. It has to have merit. That's why I will never consider modern art as valid as the Old Masters, the Barroque, and Mannerism, and also why I have discounted Roccoco.
Brief explanation: The Roccoco is basically the period following the Baroque. The technique used in the paintings of this era is highly refined, yet, restricted to subject matter including empty f*cking living rooms of rich people, anonymous and generally unimportant rich people eating in their dining rooms, and rich people wiping their bums with the faces of the poor. In summary, it was when rich people tried to assure their status by getting paintings made, of inane parts of their lives. i.o.w. = l0se

To Shipton: I'll admit I made a mistake by dumping the entirety of the sites under such a vague and subjective term. However, do you remember when that editor from the Washington Post said that, in his opinion, YTMND'ers were artists? Does calling YTMND's of any kind 'art' devalue any 'true' art forms and media, such as film, music, poetry, and whatnot? No, not at all. Valuating and classifying art are two entirely different things. I'm not saying that all of the sites featured are necessarily good or
interesting (some of them seem to be pointless and edgy for pointless edge's sake), but as far classifying them I think I am justified in calling them a form of expressing an aesthetic idea. Also, if you think I like certain pieces of art simply because they are "edgy," then you are sorely mistaken.
