If Im not mistaken, this was the insparation for the silent hill movie plot base. The mines are burning underground. The fumes are noxious, and the town cant be inhabited. There can be 3 feet of snow in the surrounding area, but none sticks in this town, the ground is always warm.

fuel: yep, all correct. I had a lot of that in the site description already. A lot more info is in the video link... at one point they put an unlit match against the ground and it lights on contact.

The mayor still lives there, he's in his 80's. no one knows for sure exactly how many people live there, but it's estimated at 15. in the hayday of the mining operation there was over 1000

Interesting. So, I am not saying that this isn't, but some of the pics don't give off the impression that it is completely deserted...That town must have been abandoned very recently....

The fires started in 1962. Since it is a blue collar town, many families wanted to keep their roots there. The few people try to keep the cemetary and such clean, but it's hard when enough coal to keep a 1000 year old fire is making sink holes.

Test: yeah, except watch the site and realize that the heat of the fire has caused the roads to buckle and crack. The only road that isn't a back road is Route 61, and it's closed off due to the buckling and the random sink holes.

Good Luck drag racing with those huge bumps and potholes in the road!

Drag Racing? What with the random sinkholes in the road, the pavement hot enough to melt tires and the poisonous gases rising from the earth? F*CKING GREAT IDEA! I will watch!

I was aware. Just didn't want noobs trying it and hurting themselves. Actually, I didn't want them trying it unless they got it on film. "Epic Silent Hill Drag Race Maneuver"

That Centralia story always interested me. The fact that a fire has been burning under the town for so long is intriguing if nothing else. I'd love to go there someday and check it out for myself. With a respirator and a canary, just in case.

I know where that is, Fires started along time ago when a dump fire caught a coal vein on fire, eventually it spread throughout the whole area. Sudden sink holes, random fires, toxic gas spurts out at random, the place is a real hell.

I'm just gonna auto-1 all abandoned sites from now on. They require no effort whatsoever, aren't funny, aren't interesting, and aren't even original anymore.

Can't they just block off the mines, starving the fires of oxygen? Allll that coal needlessly poluting. I know it wouldn't be easy to block it off due to the movement of the earth, but I think it's something they should probably try.

Khono: it would cost rediculous ammounts of money to stop the fires, and the federal goverment said it wasn't cost effective. Zen: the pictures are pixelated enough as is. If I make em bigger it will go from small looking decent pictures to huge pieces of crap. k3l: wouldn't be a SILENTMND without the music.

The 15 people left in the town take good care of it. since it had maybe 100 times the ammount of people in it before, I would consider it abandoned.
