double edged swords are double edge swords. On on hand there is a sword, which can cut you and hurt you pretty bad. But on the other hand there is a sword, which can cut you and hurt you pretty bad. So in a sense to do some damage with the sword you have to take some damage from the sword, which is why they call it a double edge sword, because it is a sword with double the amount of edges of a normal sword, which is two.
