Nagisa Shiota is the main protagonist and narrator of Assassination Classroom. He is a student in Korosensei's Class 3-E at Kunugigaoka Junior High School who has a natural talent for assassination despite his overall passive nature. Nagisa is the son of Hiromi Shiota and her presumable ex-husband. His mother had hoped for a daughter so she could experience all the things she had missed as a child through her but got a son instead. Her personality also caused her husband to leave her and Nagisa. Nagisa was in Class D during his first two years of middle school before falling into Class 3-E due to poor grades. During those two years, he hung out with fellow classmate Karma Akabane, although they slowly drifted apart before becoming classmates again. Soon after starting the new term as a Class E student, Nagisa met Kaede Kayano, who gave him what would become his signature pigtails instead of the ponytail he usually uses to keep his long hair from being less noticeable, thus beginning their friendship.

The fall of Damascus marked the end of the Assad family regime, which had ruled Syria as a totalitarian hereditary dictatorship since Hafez al-Assad assumed the presidency in 1971 as a result of the Corrective Revolution. As the Southern Operations Room, a rebel coalition, encroached on Damascus while attempting to find the former president, reports emerged that Assad had fled the capital on a plane. The Syrian rebels subsequently declared victory against the Assad government on state television, while Russia's foreign ministry announced Assad's resignation and departure from Syria. Russia subsequently reported that it had given Assad and his family asylum.

On 7 October 2023, during the Re'im music festival massacre, Shani Nicole Loukwas killed. Shortly after the attack, a video circulated showing her body paraded through the streets of Gaza by Hamas militants in the back of a pickup truck. Described by security experts and commentators as Hamas's social media propaganda, it became one of the first viral videos of the Israel–Hamas war. At the end of the month, Israel confirmed Louk's death based on the discovery of a skull fragment on the road leading out of the festival grounds, indicating that she was killed during the attack, while trying to escape.
