Fad and cross-fad YTMNDs succeed because of title recognition and keyword searches. Creating a completely fresh breakthrough YTMND is rare and difficult - it's more tempting to play it safe to guarantee a minimum of votes. It's just like the music industry where truly creative & original artists may get a cult following, at best - everyone bitches about it, but that's the reality of the marketplace like it or not. Sometimes the mediocre rises to the top. Enjoy your white bread and mayonnaise sandwich.

Atrahasis - if anyone tried to have this discussion on the YTMND forums, everyone saying something would be banned and any conversation would be sandwiched between humongous pictures of bill cosby and posts that just say "care". As for newbies, i have my own theory - while i hate seeing a newly registered user with skills immediately start making fad compilations and YTMND tributes, on another level it makes sense - all the fads are new to them, its a lot to walk into, they dont know whats Currently relevant to a regular viewer.

I kind of like it the way it is now. I'd like to be able to see what's first at a glance. It's already how things are organized in UaC and Top Rated sections. Hopefully there shouldn't be too much extra downvote-because-you're-first going on in the Contest, unless someone REALLY wants that ham sandwich.
