Well, I suggest that we all run back to my back yard, get out some lawn chairs, start a bon-fire and start laughing our heads off about how we did it over some beer. We can laugh and drink and tell stories until we fall asleep or passout. Sure, the next day eBaum's users will come by and try to talk some sh*t, but then we'll just offer them a beer and fire up the grill.
It's like what you do after you get everyone together to fork the lawn that *sshole down the street. You don't hold no malice toward him, he learned his lesson and you move on, occasionally bringing it up in community functions, and everyone has a laugh, even that *sshole who says something similar to "and man was it a bitch to get all those out the next morning".
Oh, and btw, that was pretty funny guys.

And I agree with most of the users here however. You'll have to bring in alot more moderators before the idea of a moderation que would be feasible.
Also, I'd suggest trying to work on that new moderator interface we were talking about on the forums before then went kaput.

Makcs is in srs trubs IRL. The best thing to do is wear a suit and tie and look legit. It worked on my DUI (driving in ultimate hawtness) and in law it is THE APPEARANCE of professionalism that matters. Suit and tie mean more than legal skilllzesszz. I have tried to give advice since early on but no one has listened. I'm sure any actual lawyers that have read my stupid sh*t know I know what I am talking about, as in YTMND vs Adulthood. The lack of maturity amongst the users is a huge liability, etc.

i dont know man, charging YTMND users may be a bit of a burden to ourselves, but if the alternative ends up being the site not existing - The Nazi LOLacaust option of elimating unviewed/unvoted on sites, shutting down registration and paying to avoid advertisements is something i can live with. I dont know what other ideas to come up with - anything else would be radical changes that i havent thought the consequences of - you talked about Some reviews section before, like as if the ytmnd.com main page became a choice between going to the sites area or a more blog/different styled entertainment site/main page with a staff of contributors that could perhaps generate more revenue to the site without costing nearly as much in bandwidth.

Can featured users please get some kind of feature to vote in or out other featured users? Because there are a handful of pinkos -- and I think we all know who I'm talking about here -- who need to have the threat of banishment over their heads to keep them in line.

ear rape is fine, just nsfw. downvoting is fine, gives a balance to ytmnd. however, constantly talking trash in comments needs to be controlled, due to the fact that it does piss users off and makes everyone sound like little children. so, something better than just a +/-, which does very little, that can eliminate this type of flaming.

Forget shirts, jackets and hats. Max needs to look at YTMND as a whole and think long and hard to himself what every single user here always needs. I of course am talking about YTMND brand condoms, pregnancy tests, c*ck rings and of course sunscreen.

Sorry guys but as much as you think (and you think it because you are following what other people think) fourest has made alot of sites that made me LOL. I am talking really laughing out loud sitting on my computer by myself. Until you can amass a site list like his then you need to stfu. It's people like him who bring new users to the site and make max money from ads and donations. A person who actually wants to entertain people through his humor, graphics and sounds. That's why I have always backed him

And that's the whole thing I've been talking about dealing with. But you can't turn around and say someone using 10 alts to downvote a sites is bad, but using 10 alts to upvote my own site is good because it balances out in the end. That's destructive, self-serving logic. Do you have any idea how many users have caught people upvoting their own site with a bunch of alts as soon as it was made? That isn't countering downvoters. That's forcing a site into the U&C.

But seriously, you should make it so people will stop posting that creepy looking kid with the deformed face. I tend to now stay away from the recently created because of that user with the fifty million alt sites. If you look at that section and click on all of the sites, at least half of them have that picture. I would give you a link to it, but I can't even look at it without losing sleep every night. Please someone know what I'm talking about. =(

I only ever communicate with users via comments/news posts, for most of the day to day I discuss stuff in the ytmnd dev irc chat, I would be very pleased if more people idled in there and popped in to partake in discussions. Featured users was something I made in an evening after talking with ROY4L briefly.

Yep. I didn't want to be so blunt bu you are right filibuster: ytmnd is really dead. And Umfuld, Up and coming only shows 10 sites on the frontpage. "Hundreds" what are you talking about? I think the point you are trying to make is that its harder to get exposure, but that is MORE due to a lack of users issue than an overabundance of sites rated over 4. Ratings are just an abstraction that tells us how much we will like a site, and acts as a filter for exposure. Beyond that ratings have no value.

For the record, I thought the last update was awesome and I like everything but black on white text and Ed Hardy t-shirt style graphics on the new one. Oh, and I wish my own name were a different color than 'random user' like it used to be because I only care about my own comments. That's the narcissism in me talking. It's the only thing worth listening to. Also, this is all off the record, just like last time.

I realize it's there, I just don't like the new set up where I have to go looking for comments that have been made on my sites, especially old ones. The old way, new comments were clearly visible from my profile page as soon as I went there. You couldn't miss them. Now I can't see them without going fishing for them and people can have a full conversation on a site of mine without me knowing.

A perfect example of this is on the site I made this observation on. It belongs to daily user who did not realize for a week that 3 people were talking on a site of his. Its so easy to miss now.

I like the idea of the social enhancements max made, but a couple of the changes to the old way seem to have decreased the very social factor they were meant to increase.

I think I read most of the comments in this journal post twice. I feel very concerned about the situation that is creating here. I sense so much hate, whether it is staged or not. I don't want to talk about me, but I have to tell you this: I'm quite a sensitive person and I visit this site maybe 20 times a day. I like to see what people share, I like the funny stuff, but when I look harder I read the comments, I see downvotes driven by pure hate, jealousy or even for no reason at all (dare I say "just for fun".) And since the site is up again the negativity is palpable more than ever. I'm even experiencing it firsthand, thanks to a user who doesn't act like his/her blood is flowing to his/her brain. As Max said in a post in 2007 (I'm paraphrasing,) freedom of speech is ok, but when the shit hits the fan you have to spend a lot of time cleaning the fan. And a soapy sponge is not enough.
I like to imagine this site as a place where you have fun, reflect and discuss about what people feel important to share. Do we really have to fight against each other, for things which don't even concern our role in this community? Do we have to scream and offend, saying the obvious most of the time? Do we have to judge, condemn and bash just because we think we have a right to say whatever we want?
I live in a place where school books used to be regulated by the "government" and still there's a lot to complain about openness. Stephen Colbert often jokingly says "Freedom isn't free." Maybe he's right, if you think about it. We have been given a chance to express ourselves, by a sole person. Let's not spoil this opportunity, we cannot take anything for granted. For the sake of this community, behave yourself. All of us. Me too.

That wouldn't be finger pointing at all. I pointed out this problem a few comments up:
http://ytmnd.com/news/109/c59028
http://ytmnd.com/news/109/c59038

It's just that I personally don't like to name names. But I don't condemn it, everyone has a right to speak, reasonably or not. It's up to us to judge if something deserves to be considered.
When I talked about improving the general mood I must have been too generic. You can improve the mood of the community indirectly: pointing out the trolling is a very good start. But I must remind what we already know: that every reference to trolls makes the trolls stronger, and there's no way to get rid of them if not with some extreme measures, which don't necessarily need to be permanent. I believe this site is now a machine that has a broken gear; unfortunately we, as simple users, can't replace it.
Some comments ago I suggested the community should unite and work together and stop making wars. But some users told me that it seems impossible, because there are so many differences, even about whether noise sites are good or not (and that should be a no-brainer, in my opinion.)

Predictability is one of your few mottos. And I don't mean it like "Craig Ferguson is predictable", because he is an established comedian. You are not. I can even predict the content of the replies to this message: one of you, most probably the first, will downvote this comment and write "didn't read"; another one will make a half-witty statement about how I'm playing their game just by talking about them; another one will reply to the first reply with at least two accounts, with links to sites about the user who made the first reply; then the conversation would fall into a confusing mix of unoriginal offensive remarks. I could say more but it's not worth it.

If I had to see a change in your pattern, I wouldn't believe it. You are like a dead rotten body who doesn't want to realize it's dead. So it keeps doing the same things over and over. Even the supposedly most dangerous member of your band of futility fails to impress, the only unusual feature be exploiting a bug in the site code. And with a very little creative outcome. You try to make a 4chan-esque repetition fit into a structure that is not intended, not even suitable for such actions. You keep on doing it, since 2006 at least, and you still don't understand it. I suppose you make this for your own enjoyment, but why doing it here? It's like riding a bike with square wheels.

YTMND is a flexible community, but not much. You are trying to break it, but the more you bend it, the more it becomes stiff, and eventually it will push you out as it comes back to its original shape.

I'm just curious: how many moderators does YTMND have that are active, if any?

There's no doubt that the community's quality has gone down. From any perspective if it's not x user who thinks x user(s) are the problem, it's the other way around. People have different tastes and different ideas as to what YTMND should be, so it seems to me the most effective way to make the community better is simply to reduce redundant banter and argumentative users who are pricks on a daily or near daily basis - this is a small group of people, among a not so large group of total active users.

Of course, what constitutes someone being a prick is also a variable. Long, recurring troll discussions between two or more who always go at it as being one that most people would agree on. I'm sure there are rules that cover a portion of this sort of thing and that's led to some of the more volatile, non-contributing members (who need not be named) being comment banned, account banned, possibly IP banned (if that has been done). Then of course there's the very obvious moon crew shit which personally seems to have dwindled, however it seems for anyone who posts a generic moon crew site, an IP ban is in order.

I'm not sure how the site will evolve from this point, but I know that behavior has been a detracting factor firsthand from various users (mik3m, comradvolk and myself just to name a few). The back and forth thing is an obvious byproduct of all this, and I'm not talking about YTMND transients like Umfuld who actually makes sites, says things in jest and is at best grumpy from time to time, more so those who seek to start shit. On occasion, this place is sometimes comparable to 4chan.

So with all that said, would it be in the best interest of YTMND to give well-behaved, legacy members who are still active possible moderator jobs? People like Ochobobo come to mind. Many might decline it but I'd assume some would be happy to take the position.

Everyone has their opinions about Lego, fourest, and fearcondom (who has been gone for I don't know how long), but when it comes down to it, they post decent material, quality stuff you probably wouldn't find too easily on other websites.

Something quirky about a particular topic:
[site hossenfeffer:site]

Film and gaming:
[site confident:site]

Something completely bizarre:
[site rainbowremix:site]

Someone who knows nothing about YTMND, who happens to have any of the above be the first site they ever see, is likely to continue to click other YTMNDs. If they are unfortunate enough to pick one of your WTC7 gifs with a misleading title, they'll think this site is run by fucking retarded conspiracy theorists and never come back. The up and coming isn't perfect, but there's a much better chance that something good is there, more so than the recently created.

I shouldn't be one to talk about great content, as I'm no expert YTMND maker, but I'm not gonna stay quiet when a jealous lizard with zero site making skills is trashing users who clearly excel in making YTMNDs.

The old layouts are dated. The current one is fine, other than the placement issues I mentioned above.
