Actually they only stole the aerodynamic shape since it was already tested the internals wewre very diffrent and in someways actually were an improvement over the US shuttle in that they didn't use hypergolics also the russian shuttle had jet engines so it could make a second landing attemp if it missed the runway.
The energia rocket that launched it was the most powerful booster ever flown beating the US satun V by something like 10 tons in a 53 degree orbit.
