Hydrogen Bombs: An instructional YTMND
for the love of f*cking christ, DO NOT use table salt, it liberates CHLORINE GAS which will kill you dead. Video from the YTMND can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htr4cZIiOWs

Pretty sure you should include the ear-rapingly good explosion the baloon makes in the clip. We made these in AP Chem.
September 23rd, 2006
(1)
Also people, this is merely a hydrogen gas explosion it's a pretty small, containable flare, and all it does really is make a big noise. CALL THE FIRE DEPARTMENT!

5'd for your name + bomb... also for how you're handling all the questions. I'm impressed.

Seeing as sexymofo gave this a 5 I'm in a dilema... should I go with my normal standards and 5 this or must I be opposite of my foe and vote 1 star... OMG PARADOX! Ok 3'd. (but you still rock)

its not a real hydrogen baloon or it would float being as hydrogen is the lightest element but its still f*cking cool
September 23rd, 2006

wait, isn't hydrogen lighter than air? Why was the balloon just hangin out on the ground?

VikingTyr & SLVRBLLT40: There are 2 possibilities: 1) i am making hydrogen and oxygen, and the oxygen is weighing down the balloon so that it wont float. 2) I have not filled the balloon with sufficient hydrogen to counter the weight of the balloon itself, and thus it still falls to the ground. I will be making a much larger balloon to determine which of the above possibilities are correct. I also plan on seperating the gases at some point to prove 100% exactly which gases i am producing.

You can just put drano in a empty wine bottle, throw in a lil foil and put a balloon on the top, a lot less time and effort. Still really cool.

yes, but the chemical that is reacting with the aluminum is Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) an extremely corrosive chemical, the method i have shown here produces hydrogen with no harmful chemicals being used or produced as a by product.

Hydrogen is extremely easy to extract. This is a creative but very difficult mean of doing it. A simple draino bomb without the cover will serve the same purpose. Or you could put an open flame next to the draino bomb and it will have presure explosive combined with a combustion explosion. fun eh?
September 23rd, 2006
(0)
^ that would be great fun, except for the part where you spray highly corrosive NaOH all over the place when you detonate the bottle......

Mix some Windex and Clorox in a bottle and attach a baloon. Then lock yourself in a small, unventilated room and pop the baloon!

F*cking seriously, how can you give this anything less than a 5?
September 23rd, 2006
(0)
wait do you use two adapter or one. i'm a little confuse on this. btw if that is pure Hydrogen in the balloon you can combine it with pure oxygen and you will get the same result as what they use for the space shuttle. Hydrogen+Oxygen combines to make H2O and in the process looses a little mass which is coverted into energy. That will probably make a better explosion.
September 23rd, 2006

you should like stick a fuse to it to be safe insted of lighting it at a close distance.

September 23rd, 2006

waitaminnit... how much voltage is that transformer putting out? that could affect the speed at which this happens. i have done this with a 9 volt, but no baloon. i think if you put some type of divider in there to seperate the positive and negative terminals, and vented the one that wasnt hydrogen, then you could get a pure hydrogen thing going on! you may have to take the bottle in half and glue a peice of plastic in there.
September 23rd, 2006
(0)
a-team: You use one adapter. There are two wires that carry current, one being a positive, and the other being a negative wire. And regarding a fuse, i made a comment yesterday about using a post it note stuck to the balloon instead of standing over it with a bbq lighter.
September 23rd, 2006
(0)
I'm staying away from balloons from the rest of my life :P
September 23rd, 2006
(0)
Troggie42: The transformer im using has an output of 12V at 1A. From what i have observed so far, i believe pure oxygen is also being produced, therefore if you DON'T seperate the gases, you get a more powerful explosion than you would if it were just pure hydrogen and no oxygen.
September 23rd, 2006
(0)
The electrodes cannot be placed in seperate bottles, the current needs to be able to flow from one to the other, if they are seperated, its like having an open circuit, and it won't operate.
September 23rd, 2006
(0)
awesome... i was hoping for a mushroom cloud though....
September 23rd, 2006

Yes rabbit you do produce oxygen gas too. What happens is the baking soda decomposes into sodium carbonate and water. Water, through electrolysis, separates into hydrogen gas and oxygen gas. Oh SNAP my engineering classes are actually useful.
September 23rd, 2006
(0)
Rabbit, what happens if you continually run electricity through the baking soda until it completely decomposes? First you'll end up with sodium monocarbonate instead of sodium bicarbonate, and then if you continue to process it you should end up with sodium oxide (na20). No way to separate the oxygen from the sodium right? Because pure sodium can be a lot of fun too if you toss it in water.

srsly.. I learned this, first year in chemistry. I guess most kids will pay attention to ytmnd rather than school.
September 24th, 2006
(-1)
i just had an interesting thought. if you mix water with baking soda it would fizz before you plug the adapter in the wall, so what you're actually getting in the balloon is CO3.
September 24th, 2006
(1)
a-team: C03 isnt even a gas, its a polyatomic anion. And when you dissolve baking soda in water, it does not fizz. It would only fizz if you added an acid to it, which would react with the basic HC03 solution and produce CO2 gas. And if i wasnt getting hydrogen in the balloon, it wouldnt be explosive at all, and as you can see, that is definately not the case. May i suggest repeating the 7th grade?

this is a hydrogene/oxygene bomb, one of the most powerful chemical reactions. A hydrogen bomb is not a chemical reaction, it is a nuclear reaction.

btw i noticed your hot glue was white, is it some kind of special hot glue? b/c i did this with a 14V 220mA transformer, i got a lot of bubbles and the balloon started to blow up but the bottle just leaked... i was disappointed. but im working on getting a much, much, much larger one, like 4 amps and 9.4 volts, my remote control car fast charger

That was a chemical hydrogen bomb. A nuclear hydrogen bomb (tiny) would require a tiny phial of liquid hydrogen, and two radiation-beam emmiters. The radiation-beam emmiters are tiny phials of radioactive waste excited by electrical currents to rapidly release the energy locked up inside, and has multiple lenses to focus the radiation. The energy beams excite the liquid hydrogen, causing it to turn into plasma and cause rapid nuclear fusion. That's science for ya. Same thing works with diamonds.
