I've learned to completely disregard join dates, and tend to respect people for what they've done for the community; rather than how long they've been a part of it. And I know what you mean. It's very easy just to plug down votes for like or dislike, but I find that I can describe a vote much easier if I leave a thoughtful comment and an appropriate vote. Maybe you could try voting 2-4 instead of not voting at all?
